Market Friday @ Itam Local Market + Market Survey and Inflation Rate

Greeting's my great and amazing people of #marketfriday I trust you're having a wonderful shopping with your loved once or alone. For me @ihechi, I'm here to share with you this morning my outing to our market briefly to get little thing for the kids.

I'm glad to be part of this week's edition of #Marketfriday organized by @dswigle and I hope you'll enjoy this brief outing made by me to one the local markets around my vicinity. Stay tuned as we gradually check the parts I visited during my market survey.

A Brief History About Itam People and the Market
The market in question is known as Itam market, located at Uyo local government area of Akwa Ibom state. Itam is a name of a clan that has over 60 villages, while the market have existed for over 3 centuries.

Itam market is a central market that house different ethnic groups who come on a four day period to transact their businesses. This means that the market holds every 4 days and not on a daily basis, although in recent times people sell along the roadside on a daily basis but that doesn't make the main market a daily one.

Itam people are accommodative and respects visitors. One irony about the Itam man is that he can give the last food to a stranger and console his household for that day. It's actually not starving them but it shows how he values visitors who comes to his house.

I went to the market this morning to get some foodstuffs for the family. Getting things from the market morning time is always the best as you'll buy things cheap, and also there are many alternative in case the one before you is not the exact one you're looking for you can comfortably check the next place.

My Observations at the Market Today
People were not as many as they use to be in previous market days and I think it can be as a result of two things:

  • it's not pay day. Akwa Ibom state is more of civil servant state and most people depends on monthly salary to stock their houses.
  • high cost of goods. High cost of goods can be related to the current inflation rate of the country and the high cost and scarcity of petrol. Although, in Nigeria once there's a hike in price, it remains there for a longer time and probably won't come down.

This is just the little I'm able to get for today. @ihechi is saying do have a love weekend. Love you all.

Thank you! That was a wonderful post and so well done! The market is nice and I guess I didn't realize this one was only open every fourth day. The price of goods is so hight it is ridiculous!

Is there something you wanted to get but didn't that day because of cost?

Thank you for being a part of #MarketFriday! I cannot tell you how pleased I am to see so many participating every week. I have learned so much about the different cultures of the world, especially the small things that go unnoticed except by those looking for them. Life is interesting, wherever you are, whatever you are doing. I hope the week has found you healthy and happy, as we all look to prosper in our way of life.

#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but, it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that is these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world.
