Greetings to all the esteemed participants of #Marketfriday organized by @dswigle. It's a pleasure to participate in today's Market Friday and to bring to you my experience and an update on the prices of commodities on this week's price cap.
Farmers market is actually located at the heart of Uyo the Akwa Ibom State capital, Nigeria. There are 3 senatorial district's that make up the Akwa Ibom political hemisphere: Uyo, Eket and Ikot Ekpene. Today's Market Friday is taking us to the Uyo Senatorial District and the Farmers Market is at the Uyo Plaza.
Uyo Plaza is one of the most busiest commercial center in the state and ultimately oversees different commercial activities. The Farmers Market, Uyo is actually 7 years old in the city but have been a key site for fruits and vegetables and other food stuffs in the city.
In any event, I'll focus my activity for today, which is my shopping activities at the Farmers Market.
My purpose of going to the market is very simple, to get some fruits (most especially Apples 🍎🍏🍎🍏) and vegetables.
I'll start by saying that the cost of Apples 🍎🍏🍎🍏 this week increased by 20% from the previous two weeks that I did some shopping at the same shop. Last two weeks I bought a pack of apple at #1,600 and and today its now #1,850. While garlic 🧄🧄 and onions 🧅🧅 also added a little above the last market price.
I believe that the changes in price is as a result of the increase in the price of shipments on importation of goods. It should be noted Apples aren't produced or cultivated in Nigeria, so it's either shipped from the US or other parts of Europe.
From a general palance, the goods I went to buy weren't that expensive when compared to the devaluating state of the naira. It's obvious that things might still rise in couple of weeks to come due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, most especially in the importation of grains to the country. Although the solution to this challenges facing the country at this moment is to invest and reinvest into commercial agriculture and concentrate on goods that we have comparative advantage over and not just cultivating crops at random.
I think once this is done, we can sell our goods to neighboring African countries, while we do less of importation.
Thanks for reading my post. Have you followed @dswigle, we so now to get updates from #MarketFriday.
Rules of the Road to Join #MarketFriday!
It's nice reading through and seeing things sold in Uyo.
Thanks for sharing all you bought at the market today.
It is our prayer that things do not go out of hands even as the problems with Russia and Ukraine is still on.
Thank you very much @jessicaossom for the timely comment. It's our collective responsibilities to pray for the peace of Ukraine.
That is a really nice Farmer's Market there! I noticed the berries come from Peru, with the same exact brand (Driscolls) that I buy here! It was just funny to how far and wide they distribute their goods!
They did go up a lot, I think! 20% is huge, although, I have seen many more much higher. It is good to see they are trying to keep the prices down. I want to thank you for your well-put-together post!
Thank you for being a part of #MarketFriday! I cannot tell you how pleased I am to see so many participating every week. I have learned so much about the different cultures of the world, especially the small things that go unnoticed except by those looking for it. Life is interesting, wherever you are, whatever you are doing. I hope the New Year finds you healthy and happy, as we all look to prosper in our way of life.
#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers markets and eventually branching out and evolving over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but, it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact of what is these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world.
