Wasted talent

Time is something impossible to control, and it doesn’t matter how much we try, there is no way to control time. Some people can make the best use of time, and some people pass the time lazily without doing anything. They just think that they can catch up with others if they work hard later. Unfortunately, they never become serious about it unless they come to the end line, and in case of study, it’s also the same. Good students always work hard and prepare their lessons, while the lazy ones keep delaying, and they try to catch up when the exam approaches. It becomes very difficult for them to cover everything within a short time.

I am not a job holder yet, but I do tuition. I have several students, and most of them belong to the good category. But not everyone. There are some of my students who are quite talented, but they never make any effort. As their teacher, I know how talented they are, and I can understand their potential well, but it doesn’t matter how talented they are or how much potential they have; they are bound to hit rock bottom at the end because if they don’t make any effort, their talent is useless. It doesn't matter how much I try to persuade all the students to give their best shot, a few students never take it seriously, and I can’t control them all the time as I have only limited time to control them or guide them. You must be curious to know why I am saying this today. Obviously, it’s because of my students also.

At the present time, the SSC exam is ongoing in our country, and several of my students are candidates for the exam. And their next exam is Mathematics, and many students fear math, and it’s known to all. So, in the last two days I have been trying to assist all of my SSC exam candidates to do well, and to be honest, it’s quite exhausting. Even good students also need some clarification related to exams, and it’s natural. Those students who worked hard are not the issue. I just need to boost their confidence and give some pointers related to exams, and they can easily understand if they have any problems in Mathematics.

But those people who didn’t prepare well are indeed hard to handle right at the moment because it’s indeed hard to make them understand all the things, as it’s not possible to make them understand all the things that I taught them in the last one year. But still there is a way to manage them and make decent results in exams, as long as they want to make efforts in a short time, and as their teacher, I am trying my best. I have been coming late the last two days as I was trying to solve their thoughts. Even after coming home, I am solving their doubts online also. I am not exhausted staying active here. Among those students I saw, a few of them can understand and solve math easily with my little help, and it’s making me feel bad because they are very talented and can grasp things easily, but they are too late to become serious. I wish those few students were serious one month ago. At least I am confident that they could bring A+ with my guidance based on the ability I am seeing now. I just feel bad for them because they were talented, but they didn’t use their talent when they had time.

It’s hard for them to overcome those students who were serious from an earlier time. Hard work and continuous efforts are something that can beat talent also. Whatever, I hope all of my students do well in the exams.

Talent without discipline is a scam people tell themselves. You’re seeing the ugly truth up close: some students are bright, but if they keep delaying, the exam doesn’t care about their potential. That part of your post hits hard because it’s real, not motivational wallpaper.

The image works too. The contrast between the calm, focused students and the stressed center figure sells the point well — late panic is always noisier than steady preparation. Brutal, accurate, and honestly a little too familiar for anyone who has ever touched mathematics the night before an exam.

What you wrote also matches the broader pattern people keep talking about: procrastination, anxiety, and weak study habits feed each other, while consistent guidance from teachers actually helps break that cycle, as discussed in this review on academic procrastination and this study on teacher motivation reducing procrastination. Math fear is its own beast too, and it gets worse when students wait too long, which lines up with this study on math anxiety and learning experience.

You’re also not just complaining here — you’re carrying the exhaustion of someone who actually gives a damn. That’s the difference. A lazy student wastes their own talent, but a caring teacher ends up spending extra energy trying to save them from themselves.
