Social Media Pandemic

One of the prevailing topics we need to talk about is social media and normalizing bad concepts and bad behaviors.

We appreciate and celebrate the world becoming a global village, where communication is made easier and faster but we can’t turn a blind eye on the chaos social media is causing to our society.

Everything in this life has advantages and disadvantages and social media is not exempted from this.

Normalizing Cyberbullying

It’s funny how people think cyberbullying only entails threatening, abusing, harassing or intimidating people but we forget the mean people in the comment section. The ones who post hate comments to hurt and annoy people.

You put up an amazing picture of yourself. You admire how gorgeous you look and in no time this set of keyboard warriors begins to crowd your post with hateful comments. In a bid to act funny or witty in the eyes of other people they make derogatory comments. It’s all fun and games to them and their foolish counterparts. They are only trying to catch “cruise”, they say, nothing deep, nothing personal.

You know what is worse? People normalizing the fact that you must always have hate comments on your posts. Excuse me, but who made those rules? Where was it recorded that people must be mean to others just for petty likes and comments?

While the world continues to enjoy the benefits of social media, let us not forget the harm that it is causing to people every day.

People are being bullied with their insecurities shoved in their faces. Some are reminded about their social status every day and let’s not forget how the people who aren’t educated are treated.

All these perpetrators have a free pass on all these. I mean, they are in their homes. They are only exercising their rights, and that right to them is freedom of speech. They exercise these rights at the detriment of people whose only crime was to share a picture of themselves.

People preach about being confident and building one’s self-esteem but there’s so much a person can take.

Unnecessary standards

Social media has created unrealistic standards that put people in jeopardy. Why do I have to behave a certain way or dress a certain way because it’s “Woke” or because all the damn influencers do it?

Why do I need to put myself under unnecessary pressure because society demands a certain standard and I have to live up to it?

Don’t get me started on the beauty standards and relationship standards.

So many people are dealing with insecurities because they don’t look a certain way and may I remind you that so many homes have been broken just because people can’t have the picture-perfect relationship they see on the gram. As pathetic as this sounds, it is so real.

While we can sometimes blame people for not standing their ground and resisting the pressures, social media has a larger role to play in shoving all of these in people’s faces.

I appreciate the invention of social media but right now I hate the path it is taking and the lives it is destroying.
