As soon as, i came across the prompt for this week. i took my time and then I tried to imagine what life would be like without music, and then i realised things wouldn't be the same. So many little things we enjoy every day would feel incomplete or even lifeless.
Music is literally everywhere—it has a way of creeping into the background of our lives without us even noticing. But take it away completely, and suddenly, you realize how much would be missing.
The first thing that came to mind was parties. Just picture this: you get invited to a party, dress up, arrive expecting to dance, or at least vibe to some good beats, and… nothing. No sound, no rhythm, just people standing around trying to have conversations in an awkward silence. The atmosphere would be so dry, so dull. Music is what brings the energy, the movement, and the emotion. It sets the mood. It gets people dancing, singing along, and just being free. Without it, a party would feel more like a meeting or a lecture, and that’s definitely not the kind of vibe anyone signs up for when they go out to have fun.
But beyond just entertainment, music plays a powerful role in culture. In fact, many of the traditions, stories, and histories of different communities have been passed down through songs. In the absence of music, people would have had to rely solely on word of mouth or written records to preserve their culture. And let’s be honest—not everyone can read or write, especially in ancient times. Music was a tool that connected generations. It made remembering easier and helped bind communities together.
Even today, music still carries the essence of culture. It reflects our beliefs, struggles, joys, and daily experiences. Nigerian music, for instance, is deeply rooted in storytelling. Afrobeats, highlife, juju, Fuji—all these styles tell stories that resonate with the people. Without music, we would lose a significant part of our identity.
On a more personal level, music is a form of therapy for me. There are days when I’m exhausted, stressed, or even emotionally down, and the only thing that gives me a bit of comfort is plugging in my earpiece and playing my favourite songs. There’s a kind of healing that music offers. It doesn’t talk back. It doesn’t judge—it just plays, and somehow, it understands what a person is going through. Whether it’s gospel, Afrobeat, soul, or even any genre at all, music creates a space where I can just be myself and clear my head.
Sometimes, music fills a void that even people can’t. There are moments when no one around me can truly relate to how I feel, but one good song can express exactly what I’m going through. That’s something only music can do.
So imagining life without music feels like imagining a world stripped of emotion and expression. It’s not just about entertainment—it’s about connection, healing, culture, and identity. Honestly, I wouldn’t want to live in a world where music doesn’t exist.
