The Soul of Myanmar Music: Understanding Our Traditional Instruments

Myanmar music is a beautiful reflection of our culture, rich with history and unique sounds. To truly appreciate our melodies, we must first understand the heart of it all—our traditional instruments. Based on our ancient musical treatises, Myanmar instruments are categorized into five distinct groups, known as "Kye, Kyကြိုး, Tha-ye, Lei, Let-khoke." Let’s dive into each one!

​(မြန်မာ)
မြန်မာ့ဂီတဆိုတာ ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ ယဉ်ကျေးမှု၊ သမိုင်းကြောင်းနဲ့ ထူးခြားတဲ့ အသံဗလံတွေကို ဖော်ပြနေတဲ့ အလှတရားတစ်ခုပါပဲ။ ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ တေးသံလွင်တွေကို တကယ်တမ်း ခံစားနားဆင်နိုင်ဖို့ဆိုရင် အဲဒီအသံတွေကို ဖန်တီးပေးတဲ့ မြန်မာ့ရိုးရာ တူရိယာတွေအကြောင်းကို အရင်ဆုံး သိထားဖို့ လိုပါတယ်။ မြန်မာ့ရိုးရာ ဂီတကျမ်းဂန်တွေအရ တူရိယာတွေကို "ကြေး၊ ကြိုး၊ သားရေ၊ လေ၊ လက်ခုပ်" ဆိုပြီး အုပ်စု ၅ စု ခွဲခြားထားပါတယ်။ တစ်ခုချင်းစီအကြောင်းကို အတူတူ လေ့လာကြည့်ရအောင်နော်။

​Kye (Bronze Instruments) / ကြေးတူရိယာ

The 'Kye' group consists of instruments made of metal or bronze. These provide the bright, resonant, and foundational tones of the Myanmar orchestra (Saing Waing). Famous examples include the Kyee Waing (Gong chime) and Maung (Gongs). They are the "shining" heart of our traditional music.

'ကြေး' တူရိယာအုပ်စုမှာတော့ ကြေးနီ ဒါမှမဟုတ် သတ္တုနဲ့ ပြုလုပ်ထားတဲ့ တူရိယာတွေ ပါဝင်ပါတယ်။ မြန်မာ့ဆိုင်းဝိုင်းရဲ့ ကြည်လင်ပြတ်သားပြီး ခန့်ညားတဲ့ အသံတွေကို ဒီတူရိယာတွေက ပေးစွမ်းတာပါ။ လူသိများတဲ့ ဥပမာတွေကတော့ ကြေးဝိုင်း နဲ့ မောင်း တို့ပဲ ဖြစ်ပါတယ်။ သူတို့ဟာ ကျွန်မတို့ ဂီတရဲ့ တောက်ပတဲ့ နှလုံးသားတွေပေါ့ရှင်။

​ Kyကြိုး (String Instruments) / ကြိုးတူရိယာ

Next is 'Kyကြိုး', the string family. These instruments produce delicate and soulful melodies. The most iconic is the Saung Gauk (Myanmar Harp), known for its graceful shape and heavenly sound. Other instruments include the Tayaw (Fiddle) and Don Min.

ဒုတိယတစ်ခုကတော့ 'ကြိုး' တူရိယာ အုပ်စုပါ။ ဒီတူရိယာတွေကတော့ နူးညံ့ပြီး စိတ်ကို ထိခိုက်စေမယ့် သံစဉ်တွေကို ဖန်တီးပေးပါတယ်။ အထင်ရှားဆုံးကတော့ ကျော့ရှင်းတဲ့ ပုံသဏ္ဌာန်နဲ့ နတ်သက်ကြွေသံလို ချိုသာလှတဲ့ မြန်မာ့စောင်း ပဲ ဖြစ်ပါတယ်။ ဒါ့အပြင် တယော နဲ့ ဒုံမင်း တို့လည်း ဒီအုပ်စုထဲမှာ ပါဝင်ပါတယ်ရှင်။

The 'Tha-ye' group includes instruments with surfaces made of animal hide. These are the rhythm makers! From the majestic Pat Waing (Drum circle) to the Ozi and Dobat, these drums provide the heartbeat and energy that make us want to dance.

'သားရေ' တူရိယာအုပ်စုမှာတော့ တိရစ္ဆာန် သားရေနဲ့ ကြက်ထားတဲ့ တူရိယာတွေ ပါဝင်ပါတယ်။ ဒါတွေကတော့ စည်းချက်ဖန်တီးရှင်တွေပေါ့! ခန့်ညားလှတဲ့ ပတ်ဝိုင်း ကနေစလို့ အိုးစည် နဲ့ ဒိုးပတ် အထိ ဒီတူရိယာတွေက ကျွန်မတို့ကို ကချင်စိတ်ပေါက်လာအောင် ခွန်အားနဲ့ ရင်ခုန်သံတွေကို ပေးစွမ်းတာပါ။

Lei (Wind Instruments) / လေတူရိယာ

'Lei' refers to wind instruments played by blowing air. They carry the main melody with incredible range and emotion. The powerful Hne (Oboe) and the sweet, haunting Palwei (Flute) are the stars of this category.

'လေ' တူရိယာဆိုတာကတော့ လေမှုတ်ပြီး တီးခတ်ရတဲ့ တူရိယာတွေကို ဆိုလိုတာပါ။ သူတို့ဟာ ပင်တိုင်သံစဉ်တွေကို စိတ်ခံစားမှုအပြည့်နဲ့ သယ်ဆောင်ပေးပါတယ်။ အသံအားကောင်းတဲ့ နှဲ နဲ့ ချိုသာအေးမြတဲ့ ပလွေ သံစဉ်တွေဟာ ဒီအုပ်စုရဲ့ ကြယ်ပွင့်တွေပါပဲ။

​Let-khoke (Clappers/Percussion)

Lastly, we have 'Let-khoke', used primarily for keeping time and rhythm. These are simple yet essential. The Wa Let-khoke (Bamboo clappers) and Cymbals keep the whole orchestra in perfect sync.

Rising Star ဂိမ်းကို ကစားရင်းနဲ့ ကျွန်မတို့ မြန်မာ့ရိုးရာ တူရိယာလေးတွေကို သတိရမိစေတဲ့ ကတ်လေးတွေ ရှိပါတယ်။ ပထမဆုံးကတော့ 'Acoustic Guitar' ကတ်လေးတွေပါ၊ ဒါဟာ ကျွန်မတို့ဆီက ကျွန်းသား၊ ပိတောက်သားတွေနဲ့ အနုစိတ်လုပ်ထားတဲ့ မြန်မာ့လက်မှုဂီတာလေးတွေကို ပြန်မြင်ယောင်စေပါတယ်။ ဒုတိယအနေနဲ့ 'Cheap Fiddle' ကတ်လေးဟာ ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ ရိုးရာ 'တယော' နဲ့ တီးခတ်ပုံချင်း ဆင်တူပြီး နူးညံ့တဲ့ အသံပါဝါကို ပေးစွမ်းနိုင်ပါတယ်။ နောက်ဆုံး တစ်ခုကတော့ 'Mid Range Kit' လို စည်တွဲကတ်လေးတွေပေါ့၊ ဒါဟာ မြန်မာ့ဆိုင်းဝိုင်းရဲ့ အသက်သွေးကြောဖြစ်တဲ့ 'ပတ်ဝိုင်း' လိုပဲ စည်းချက်ဝါးချက် မှန်ကန်ပြီး တက်ကြွတဲ့ ခွန်အားတွေကို ပေးစွမ်းနိုင်တာကြောင့် ဒီကတ်လေးတွေကို ပိုင်ဆိုင်ရတာဟာ မြန်မာ့ဂီတအမွေအနှစ်ကို ဂိမ်းထဲမှာ ပြန်လည်ခံစားရသလိုပါပဲရှင်။"
