Again my wife and I managed to escape Vienna for a few days to chill at lake Balaton. I have been posting about Révfülöp and the surrounding area in my previous posts and this time I take you a bit further to the east but we are still on the north side of the lake. A pin on pinmapple has been placed for your convenience.
Tihany is on a peninsula and marks the narrowest point from north to south of the lake. The port connects cyclists and motorists alike with Szántód on the southern shore of the lake.
The peninsula has a long history with the Abbey being established in 1055 by king Andrew the first.
"King Andrew was buried in the church of the monastery in 1060. His tomb in the crypt of the church is the only grave of a medieval King of Hungary which has been preserved up until now."

We started our walk down at the port where I snapped a few pictures of the ferries that leave every 30 minutes for Szantod on the other side of the lake. If you want to save a lot of time instead of going around the lake you can just cross it. The ferry even carries big tourist buses. It costs about 8 Euro to cross with your car.You can see how narrow the lake really is since you can see the other side with your bare eye. It takes about 15 minutes for the ferry to arrive at Szantod port.
I got lucky and could see both the old ferry from the 90ies and the new one that had its first crossing last year. The new ferry looks very modern and carries a lot of passengers and cars at the same time. If you want to find out more about it you can check out the official page of BAHART https://bahart.hu/en
After the port we got in the car and drove up to the little town on the peninsula to check out the Abbey and the surrounding folklore houses.I will not add so much more text and leave you to it to enjoy the view. The so called belso to or the inner lake is a crater lake and has been here since the tertiary era so for about 66 million years. The lake is not conected to the lake balaton and has its own little ecosystem. Folklore house and traditional pottery
Another beautiful house. With the roof made out of reed. A natural fast growing resource. A reed roof holds for about 10 years before you have to start partially renovating it. However, it is hard to find contractors still doing this traditional method. The view from the Abbey to the east. Me enjoying the view. Photocredit: My wifey.

What a beautiful place!! I’ve enjoyed a lot this warm walk!!
Thank you, I am glad you liked it!
That abbey dating since the 11th century makes it such a great storyteller..if only it could speak! I love discovering such locations that are literally genuine pieces of history and have seen so many things with the passage of time. Gives you a special feeling to be around!
Absolutely, there are so many places like these all over Hungary. I have only seen a fraction of it.
Such a good reminder to visit Hungary one day. We are neighbours overall! :D
WOW what an absolutely stunning spot!
That looks like total paradise and I would love to see it IRL!
I have added it to my bucket list so one day, I hope to drive around the perimeter of the entire lake so I won't miss anything.
And swim in it to because the water looks beautiful.
OMG and the pretty little thatched roof cottages...so gorgeous...
Thanks for sharing! 😃
Thank you! It is a special place on earth that lake. I have been spending all my summer holidays there going back to the mid 80ies.
There is a bicycle road around the full lake.
https://www.outdooractive.com/en/route/bicycle-touring/lake-balaton/balatoni-bringakoer-biking-around-lake-balaton-/242900952/ it is a 220 km long roundtrip
You can even take part in the so called Balatonatuszas (swim accross the lake) from Revfulop to Balatonboglar 5,5km of swimming.
I am glad you liked the post!
Beautiful photos. Looking at it I guess you really enjoyed your travel to this place. It has a nice cultural heritage. 🫶
It has been a great trip. I have been in Tihany many times before but never took pictures. I guess it was time since the whole town got renovated and looks so much better than 5 years ago.
What a great trip to Tihany! Once I was also going to go to Balaton with a dance group, but covid prevented me🥲
Your descriptions and photos perfectly convey the magic of Lake Balaton. I was fascinated by the history of the abbey and the view of the lake from the other side. Even folk houses with reed roofs are truly unique. It must have been a very relaxing and rejuvenating stay🌸😍
Whenever you make it to Balaton it will always be a magical place, not just the lake but also its surroundings. What type of dance are you doing? It was a very nice short trip, we enjoyed it a lot thanks for your comment!
I was doing ballroom dance for 6 years professionally, and later bachata & salsa for a while (with that group I wanted to go there) but unfortunately I temporarily stopped dancing due to my travel lifestyle
I hope one day life will wind us to those areas 🙏🏻😇
