¡crack!. La silla se rompiĂł.
Yo me quedĂ© frĂo.
Respetar algo o a alguien no significa tenerle miedo.
🇬🇧 English version
I remember when I was a child, my dad had an armchair in his study that no one, absolutely no one, could touch. It wasn't carved from mahogany or some relic, but he used it to read, work, and, as he said, ponder the great mysteries of life.
For us, my siblings and I, that chair was a king's throne.
And of course, since everything forbidden is so eye-catching, you always want to try it out and see what happens, and well, everything was going well until one day, in my infinite childish curiosity, it occurred to me that this was the perfect chair to play race car driver.
I climbed in, settled in, gave it my all, a jump here, another there, and suddenly... crack! The chair broke.
I was frozen in place. I knew my dad wasn't going to yell at me like the king of yells or anything, but I still felt such a deep respect that I knew I had to face the consequences. It wasn't the kind of fear that makes you run away, but rather the kind of respect that makes you think, "Oh, I messed up."
And that's when I realized something. That's what the fear of God is.
But what is this fear of God?
Look, when the Bible talks about the "fear of God," it's not saying that we should be terrified of Him as if He were a monster waiting for us to screw up so he can punish us. No, the fear of God is more of a deep respect, a mixture of admiration and obedience.
Respecting something or someone doesn't mean being afraid of it.
Look at what the Bible says: "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" (Proverbs 9:10).
It's very clear: if you want to be wise, the first thing you have to do is understand who God is and respect Him. Because if you recognize who He is and live accordingly, you'll make better decisions.
Imagine you're driving and you see a sign that says "Curve ahead, reduce speed." It's not that the sign wants to make your life miserable; it's that it's there to keep you from crashing. Well, that's God's instructions.
Jesus explained it very clearly: "Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul, but rather fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell" (Matthew 10:28).
In other words, if there's anyone we should really pay attention to, it's God. Not because he wants to destroy us, but because He is the only one who holds our entire lives in His hands.
I can also assure you that when we learn to fear God, tremendous things happen:
We turn away from evil because we understand that it's not good for us.
We become wiser because we know who to trust.
We live in peace because we know we're in good hands.
Now let's go back to the story of the chair.
I was ready for the punishment of the year when my dad saw the broken chair, but instead of yelling at me and punishing me, he looked at me and calmly said:
You knew this could happen, right?
I swallowed and nodded, feeling terribly embarrassed. I felt I had betrayed the trust my dad had placed in me.
Son, it's not that I don't want you to enjoy things, he said slowly as he hugged me, but there are things you have to learn to respect.
That phrase has stuck with me for life.
Respecting something or someone doesn't mean being afraid of it, but rather understanding its value and acting accordingly. And that's exactly what fearing God is.
So the next time you hear about the fear of God, don't think of an angry God eager to punish us. Think of a Father who loves us so much, so much, that He gives us rules to protect and guide us.
And in the end, the fear of God is not walking in fear, but living wisely.
