Gestern spielten die Dresden Dolls, das Dark Cabaret-Duo, das eigentlich aus Boston, Massachusetts stammt, in Wien am Open Piano am Karlsplatz.
Der Ninja-Gig mit kostenlosem Eintritt war für eine gute Sache, um das Open Music Project und die soziale Musikschule DoReMi in Wien zu unterstützen, und gleichzeitig der Auftakt ihrer neuen Jubiläumstour.
Das Band-Duo Amanda Palmer und Brian Viglione, das früher nicht mit dem Wort "gothic" in Verbindung gebracht werden wollte, bezeichnet sich selber als Brecht’sches Punk-Kabarett (Brechtian punk cabaret) und hat auch die deutsche Stadt Dresden im Bandnamen.
Einer der erfolgreichsten Songs aus der Anfangsphase war "Coin-Operated Boy" (2004), der jetzt im Zeitalter der KI-Freunde wieder an Aktualität gewonnen hat.
Die Dresden Dolls machten immer wieder Pausen, sind jetzt aber wieder aktiv und feiern ihr 20-Jahre Jubiläum des zweiten Albums "Yes, Virginia..." mit einer großen Tour.
Letztes Jahr waren sie übrigens in St. Pölten am FM4 Domplatz Open-Air Konzert dabei.
Heute spielen sie noch einen Gig in der Szene Wien und am Dienstag in der Arena Wien. Dann geht die Tour weiter nach Warschau, Nové Město (Tschechien), Berlin, Utrecht, Paris, UK, USA und Kanada.

Yesterday, the Dresden Dolls, the dark cabaret duo originally from Boston, Massachusetts, performed in Vienna at the Open Piano at Karlsplatz.
The Ninja gig, with free admission, was a fundraiser to support the Open Music Project and the DoReMi social music school in Vienna, and also marked the kickoff of their new anniversary tour.
The duo, Amanda Palmer and Brian Viglione, who didn’t want to be associated with the word “gothic,” describe themselves as “Brechtian punk cabaret” and even include the German city of Dresden in their band name.
One of their most successful early songs was “Coin-Operated Boy” (2004), which has regained relevance in this age of AI girl and boyfriends.
The Dresden Dolls have taken breaks from time to time, but are now active again and are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their second album, “Yes, Virginia...,” with a major tour.
By the way, last year they performed at the FM4 Domplatz open-air concert in St. Pölten, Austria.
Today they’re playing another gig at Szene Wien, and on Tuesday at the Arena Wien. Then the tour continues to Warsaw, Nové Město (Czech Republic), Berlin, Utrecht, Paris, the UK, the U.S., and Canada.

The Dresden Dolls really have such a distinctive vibe, “Brechtian punk cabaret” fits them perfectly! It’s great that their Vienna gig also supported the Open Music Project and DoReMi school, making the show more meaningful. I’ve listened to “Coin‑Operated Boy” before, and it’s amazing how relevant it feels again today. Their 20th anniversary tour sounds exciting. I hope fans in Europe and beyond enjoy these performances!
