Nineties Friday is Back with Doom!

store.epicgames.com

In 1993 there was a new game released that changed the direction of computer gaming forever. That game was "Doom"! It was the first game ever created using 3D graphics which was a newly created program by one of the developers. Although the game was viewable in a 3D like world, your movements were restricted to good old 2D. So you you go forward, backward, left or right. You would move around the world and kill the monsters that stood in your way of reaching your destination. I still remember playing it my first time, it was amazing!

Looking back now, the game was a dinosaur, but at the time it was a the sleekest sports car in the world of video gaming. It started a whole series of Doom games and eventually even a movie based off the game. The movie starred Dwayne Johnson, one of his earlier movies, and wasn't all that good. But it all started in 1993 with the original game of "Doom'!

Friday's used to be Nineties Friday or Four Tune Fridays started by @geneeverett , but it's an event that has kind of been lost except from the posts from Gene and occasionally from myself. If you would like you can still participate and share anything from the 1990's. No prizes to be won, but it is fun!

The penny, or one cent coin, is now just a memory here in the United States as in has been permanently discontinued from production. In the end, they were just too expensive to produce. The nickel, or five cent coin, is probably next on the chopping block for the same reason. Over the years the US Mint produced billions of these coins and when you mass produce anything there are going to be some errors. Every now and again a big error known as a double die would sneak through the quality control process and make it out into circulation. The last time this happened was in 1995! I own several of these but none are stored here at the house.

If you just glance at the coin it doesn't look all that remarkable does it? But if you look closely at the date and liberty you will see what's wrong!

There is a double image! This happens when the coin is struck more than once with the second one being off center from the first giving you a ghost image. These coins are not uncommon, but still a rarity. Most sell for around $90 or more these days depending on condition. I have always been a fan of error coins and I love to find and collect them, so this was exciting back in the mid 90's. On my trips back home I would frequently search through rolls of pennies looking to find one, and I did once! That was a long time ago!

Now for some music from the 1990's!

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones

Today I was in the mood for a little ska, so I thought I would kick things off with The Bosstones. Formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1983 they were a big influence on third wave of ska in the 1990's. They recorded some great music over the decade, but one of the best known songs is "The Impression That I Get":

No Doubt

Since I was in the ska kind of mood that brought me over to No Doubt. They also started as a ska band that formed in Anaheim, California in 1986. They are fronted by the charismatic Gwen Stefani and rose to the mainstream music scene with their album Tragic Kingdom released in 1995. It had multiple high charting hits making them one of the biggest bands around. They also benefited from the third wave of ska in the 90's just like the first band today did. In 2000 they released Return to Saturn which had this song on it: "Bathwater":

Metallica

I can never resist sharing at least some heavy metal, so I had to throw in some Metallica. Although formed in Los Angeles, California in the early 1980's and were successful in the hard rock scene, they couldn't seem to enter the mainstream music. That all changed with their self-titled "Black" album released in 1991 with several mega hits like "Enter Sandman". This is off that album but a much more recent live show, you can tell by their age. But they still put on a great show even all of these decades later. If you ever get a chance to see them live be sure not to miss it! Here's "Wherever I May Roam":

Nirvana

And where would the 1990's been musically without Kurt Cobain and Nirvana? They literally changed the face of rock n' roll along with several other Seattle based bands like Soundgarden and Alice in Chains. They formed in 1987 and finally found the mainstream with their second album Nevermind in 1991. This song alone launched them into superstardom, "Smells Like Teen Spirit":

That will do it for this Friday, I do hope you enjoyed it! Please feel free to leave any comments or questions below, and as always thank you for all of your support. I really do greatly appreciate it. Have a great weekend everyone!

I met a 96 year old the other day who was collecting all the new 50c coins with the King on for her 40 year old grandson. There's certainly something about coins although I can't begin to understand the hobby..I can certainly understand the joy though.

Ah, the 90s. We didn't even know how much we loved them at the time. I saw Nirvana twice in the same weekend..

The penny was too expensive to produce, and it wasn’t even copper anymore!🙄
I guess because I stacked silver coins when they pulled them for circulation, I’m also stacking true copper pennies, not exactly sure why!😇

Reminded me of my last error coin find; a Canada 1 Cent 2007 off-center strike. Canada has her share of error coins and their is definitely a robust market for error coins. Some particular errors yield surprising auction prices. It's not my field but a fascinating one. Over the decades I just collected the old obsolete copper pennies as my sole copper stack (without spending a cent) 😉
I continue to find pennies left in Coinstar counting machines.
