Nineties Friday is Back, Kicking Off with The Big Lebowski, and Some Great Tunes From the Decade!

Yesterday while creating a post I mentioned the film The Big Lebowski. That got me thinking that it's been awhile since I put together a Nineties Friday post, so I think it's overdue. Friday's used to be Nineties Friday or Four Tune Fridays started by @geneeverett , but it's an event that has kind of been lost except from the posts from Gene and occasionally from myself. If you would like you can still participate and share anything from the 1990's. No prizes to be won, but it is fun!

Back to The Big Lebowski, this 1998 film was created by the Coen brothers and stars some very big name actors: Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore and Steve Buscemi. The movie revolves around "The Dude" Lebowski (Bridges) who is just about the world's biggest slacker. He is fond of his favorite drink, the White Russian, and pot, in addition to bowling with his buddies.

He inadvertently get dragged into the delivery the ransom money for a kidnapping. That's where things start to go seriously wrong as the money is stolen. It's a great movie if you haven't seen it, and even if you have it's always fun to re-watch! I saw it a couple months ago on streaming as a matter of fact, it's hilarious!

In 1986 the United States Mint began to produce the gold American Eagle coin made of 91.67% pure gold as a way to increase revenues as they knew investors would be hungry for their product. It was meant as a way to help pay down the national debt. The obverse (front) of the coin carried the image designed by Saint-Gaudens in 1907 and is one of the most beautiful designs ever produced for American coinage. The are available in 1 Troy ounce, one-half of a Troy ounce, one-quarter of a Troy ounce and one-tenth of a Troy ounce.

Up until 1992 the date on these coins was always done in Roman numerals, but in 1992 it was changed to Arabic numerals. So 1991 was the last year of the old numbering system. Below is a one-tenth ounce coin with date 1991 in Roman numerals:

It's a beautiful coin isn't it? I kind of like the Roman numerals, it felt more "classy" for lack of better word. Oh well, nothing lasts forever!

Now for some music from the decade!

Guns N' Roses

This band was formed in 1985 in Los Angles, California by the merging of two bands, L.A. Guns and Hollywood Rose. They went on to become one of the top bands in the world and legends of rock n' roll. Sadly, in the long run, their substance abuse problems drove them apart in the 1990's. In 1991 they released a cover of Paul McCartney's song "Live and Let Die", and it became a huge hit for the band. Here's a live performance from the UK in 1991, I guess that's why Axl Rose is wearing a kilt?

Smashing Pumpkins

Formed in 1988 in Chicago, Illinois, this band took some time gathering a following and had disappointing sales on their debut album. The second outing did better, but it was their third album Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995) that cemented them in the mainstream music scene. This song comes off that album and is called "1979":

No Doubt

Formed in 1986 in Anaheim, California (yes the home of Disneyland) this band struggled to break into the mainstream for close to ten years. Gwen Stefani took over songwriting in 1994 after he departure of her brother from the band and the album Tragic Kingdom was born. It was released in 1995 and launched them into superstardom and Gwen's lucrative solo career as well. This song came off the same album, "Just a Girl":

Since I spent most of the 1990's living in South America and the Caribbean I like to share something that was popular from the era in Spanish.

Paulina Rubio

This Mexican singer started her career young singing as part of the band Timbiriche. She eventually broke off to start a solo career but struggled to gain lasting mainstream success. That all changed with her album Paulina that made her a huge star in the Latin American world. This song comes from the same album and is called "Lo Harรฉ Por Ti" (I'll Do It For You):

That will wrap up this week's Nineties Friday. I do hope you enjoyed it and please feel free to leave any comments or questions below. As always, thank you so much for all of your support, it's greatly appreciated. Have a great weekend everyone!
