Good morning, friends of HIVE. Today is Tuesday, and at Hive Tuesdays are about music. A day to share and listen to the best melodies of all musical genres.
For weeks now I have been sharing with you different versions of some emblematic songs of Venezuela, my country, and today I would like to share with you three versions of one of the songs of the great singer-songwriter Simón Díaz, which is my favorite song of all his repertoire: Tonada de la luna llena (Tune of the full moon).
As we were taught in school, the tonadas are work songs that workers sing while they do their work of milking, plowing, threshing, harvesting. They are generally improvised songs that are repeated in their refrains and lyrics. Although in Venezuela, the tunes are most heard in the plains, the tunes of Simón Díaz have been popularized not only throughout Venezuela, but also in other countries.
There are many tonadas popularized by Simón Díaz, but perhaps the Tonada del Cabestrero and Tonada de luna llena are the most popular versions by other musicians. The following three versions are three examples of how this type of folk songs are pure poetry.
I really like this version by the Venezuelan septet La Séptima Bohemia because it goes out of the typical sound and there is a son, a guaguancó, a jazz, that makes you dance, go to the beach and have a “cuba libre” watching the sunset.
If I have to make a list with the best who have sung Tonada de Luna llena, it has to be the Mexican singer Natalia Lafourcade. We all know the musical talent that this girl has to sing this kind of folk songs, the melodious and strong voice that makes you shudder, that makes you know all our ancestors. In this version Natalia is accompanied by another great, Gustavo Guerrero, and they make a masterful interpretation. Listen to this version to make your heart grow fonder and your soul shine.
The last version is by Caetano Veloso and for me one of the best, the most beautiful, I don't know if it's because I'm a fan of this Brazilian singer. Hahaha. This version was part of the soundtrack of Pedro Almodovar's movie: The flower of my secret (1995) and Veloso's sweet voice tripled the feelings that come out when listening to this beautiful tune.
The lyrics of this song are as naive as they are poetic. It talks about the daily life of the plains, but also about feelings, using the moon as a witness, as a metaphor, as a protagonist. When one listens to this music one cannot help but be grateful that we have ears and sensitivity to appreciate simple things.
