Foot on the road to make a dream come true!

Maybe it has already become a habit for me and my girlfriend to travel to another city to enjoy big music events. In less than a month, this was the second trip we took for that purpose. On the first occasion, we went to São Paulo and you can check out how that adventure went here: Between music and emotion: my trip to Brazil’s biggest city.

This time, we didn’t have to face an eight-hour drive. The trip was shorter, about three hours to the state of Rio de Janeiro.

The festival featured some of the biggest rock bands in Brazil and a special performance by The Calling. My favorite band, Raimundos, was also on the lineup. I’ve been listening to them since I was 13, but I had never been to one of their shows before. It’s true that only one member of the original lineup remains, the bassist, who was a huge inspiration to me and the main reason I chose to play bass, passed away recently. The lead singer, Rodolfo, converted to Christianity and left the band to pursue a solo career in gospel music (I still follow his work, by the way). As for the drummer… well, I have no idea what happened to that guy.

Still, it was totally worth being there. The songs are as amazing as ever!

By the way, this trip was a gift from my girlfriend, since on our last one I was the one who took her to a festival to see her favorite band, Good Charlotte.

The trip was smooth. Going to Rio de Janeiro is always a wonderful experience, the place is beautiful and holds some of the most stunning natural landscapes I’ve ever seen. Even on the road, you can already feel what makes Rio so special, the mountains, the horizon, and those breathtaking views that never fail to impress me.

Talvez já tenha se tornado um hábito meu e da minha namorada viajar para outra cidade para aproveitar grandes eventos relacionados à música. Em menos de um mês, essa foi a segunda viagem que fizemos com esse propósito. Na primeira ocasião, fomos a São Paulo e você pode conferir como foi essa aventura aqui: Between music and emotion: my trip to Brazil’s biggest city.

Dessa vez, não precisávamos encarar oito horas de estrada. A viagem foi mais curta: cerca de três horas até o estado do Rio de Janeiro.

O festival contava com algumas das maiores bandas de rock do Brasil e uma participação especial do The Calling. Minha banda preferida, Raimundos, também estava no line-up. Eu os escuto desde os 13 anos, mas nunca tinha ido a um show deles. É verdade que apenas um integrante da formação original ainda permanece na banda, o baixista, que era uma grande referência para mim e o principal motivo de eu ter escolhido o contrabaixo, faleceu recentemente. O vocalista, Rodolfo, se converteu ao cristianismo e deixou o grupo para seguir carreira solo no louvor (ainda acompanho o trabalho dele, por sinal). Já o baterista… bem, não faço ideia do paradeiro desse cara.

Mesmo assim, valeu muito a pena estar lá. As músicas continuam incríveis!

Essa viagem, aliás, foi um presente da minha namorada já que, na nossa última, fui eu quem a levou para um festival onde tocaria sua banda favorita, o Good Charlotte.

A viagem foi tranquila. Ir ao Rio de Janeiro é sempre uma experiência maravilhosa, o lugar é lindo e abriga algumas das paisagens naturais mais impressionantes que já vi. Já na estrada é possível sentir o que torna o Rio tão especial, aquelas montanhas, o horizonte e as vistas que nunca deixam de me impressionar.

Upon arriving in the state of Rio de Janeiro, we went to a city called São João de Meriti, where a friend of ours lives. We went there so he could catch a ride with us to the festival, which was taking place a few kilometers away in the city of Nova Iguaçu.

We arrived well before the gates opened, and the line to enter was already huge, stretching across several blocks! And the heat… well, it was no less than 42 °C...

Ao chegar ao estado do Rio de Janeiro, fomos para uma cidade chamada São João de Meriti, onde mora um amigo nosso. Fomos até lá para que ele pudesse pegar uma carona conosco até o festival, que aconteceria a alguns quilômetros dali, na cidade de Nova Iguaçu.

Chegamos bem antes da abertura dos portões, e a fila para entrar no local já estava enorme, virava alguns quarteirões! E o calor, bem… fazia nada menos que 42 °C...

Even though we arrived early, the place was already packed, and the first band was already playing. The sun was blazing, almost unbearable, but the vibe was great, and a cold beer was the best way to ease the heat.

Mesmo chegando cedo, o local já estava cheio, e a primeira banda já estava tocando. O sol estava escaldante, quase insuportável, mas a vibe era boa, e a cerveja gelada era a melhor forma de amenizar o calor.

As night fell, the atmosphere became more pleasant, and the band Detonautas was bathed in the moonlight, which didn’t wait for darkness to make its appearance.

Com a noite chegando, o clima ficou mais agradável, e a banda Detonautas foi contemplada pelo brilho da lua, que não esperou anoitecer para se mostrar por ali.

My friends were feeling the heat, but with huge smiles, enjoying this amazing festival!

Minha galera estava sofrendo com o calor, mas com sorrisos enormes, aproveitando esse festival maravilhoso!

So, after several great bands, some of which I really like, it was finally time for Raimundos and wow, it was sensational. The vibe was amazing, and I was surprised by how ecstatic everyone around was during the show. Even though Raimundos has lost some ground in the rock scene, they still carry a loyal legion of fans.

Então, depois de várias bandas legais, algumas das quais eu gosto muito, finalmente chegou a hora do Raimundos e, cara, foi sensacional. A vibe era incrível, e me surpreendeu ver o quanto a galera ao redor estava em êxtase durante o show. Apesar de Raimundos ter perdido um pouco de espaço no cenário do rock, ainda carrega consigo uma legião de fãs.

I can say, with absolute certainty, that this was the concert I’ve enjoyed the most in my life. Nothing compares to the privilege of seeing your favorite band live, feeling that same sensation from my teenage years, and reliving all the memories of being in my room, wondering if I would ever get to see these guys up close.

Posso dizer, com toda a certeza do mundo, que esse foi o show de que mais gostei na minha vida. Nada se compara ao privilégio de ver a sua banda favorita ao vivo, de sentir aquela mesma sensação da adolescência e reviver todas as lembranças de quando eu estava no meu quarto imaginando se algum dia iria conseguir ver esses caras de perto.

Being up front, seeing everything so close, moshing, hugging people I’d never met, and singing along to the same song is something only music can provide. The sense of fulfillment was immense, and I enjoyed every second of that moment, everything there was totally worth it.

Poder estar lá na frente, vendo tudo de tão perto, moshar, abraçar pessoas que eu nunca tinha visto na vida e cantar junto a mesma canção é algo que só a música pode proporcionar. A sensação de realização foi enorme, e eu aproveitei cada segundo daquele momento, tudo ali valeu a pena.

It stays in the memory, in the soul, everything that was experienced there. It lingers in the recollection and in the joy of another dream fulfilled, allowing me to tell that 13-year-old boy — the Felipe of the past — that his imagination and desire to see his favorite band play up close became reality. And it was absolutely amazing!

Fica na memória, na alma, tudo o que foi vivido ali. Fica na lembrança e no prazer de mais um sonho realizado, podendo dizer para aquele garoto de 13 anos, o Felipe do passado, que as imaginações e a vontade de ver a banda favorita tocar tão de perto se tornaram realidade. E foi simplesmente incrível!
