Today, I reveal three musicians who fled fame like the devil flees the Christian cross. Syd Barret (Pink Floyd), Mark Hollis (Talk Talk), and Lauryn Hill. Media scrutiny, physical and mental exhaustion, and the pressure of fame led these artists to retreat into total or partial isolation.

Being constantly in the spotlight, with the unbearable invasion of privacy, is not for all artists. Escape into anonymity is the only possible way out. The film “Last Days,” directed by Gus Van Sant, is an introspective work about Kurt Cobain, who isolated himself in a mansion to avoid managers, friends, and his own identity as a “rock star.” It is an accurate portrayal of the isolation caused by fame.

He was there at the birth of Pink Floyd and left them in 1968. He made two more solo albums and went to live anonymously with his mother in Cambridge, devoting himself to gardening and painting. Until his death in 2006, he refused contact with former bandmates and the press.

Excessive drug use and mental health problems, in addition to the enormous difficulties of dealing with the pressure of success, took this pioneer of psychedelic rock off the scene.

Unlike other musicians who isolated themselves due to mental health issues, addiction, or pressure, the Talk Talk frontman withdrew in a conscious, almost philosophical way, based on a search for silence. He was perhaps the most authentic example of someone who used success to buy the right to never be famous again.

In the 1980s, several hits elevated the band Talk Talk to stardom. Hits such as “It's My Life” and “Such a Shame” flooded the radio with Mark Hollis' distinctive voice. Without repeating formulas, the albums Spirit Of Eden and Laughing Stock were almost experimental, full of empty spaces and jazz sounds.

For Hollis, tours and promotional interviews were distractions that contributed nothing to what he wanted to achieve. In addition, he began to despise the commercial structure of music. He stopped in 1998 with the release of his only solo album of the same name, a minimalist record to end his career and leave in a brilliant way.

He devoted himself to his family, and for two decades he gave no interviews, performed no shows, and released no new music. He passed away in 2019, leaving behind an aura of genius and a legacy that influenced bands such as Radiohead and Sigur Rós.

She became one of the biggest stars on the planet, winning five Grammys in 1998 with the smash hit The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. According to her, she felt watched and became unhappy with the music industry. She devoted herself to spirituality and her family, staying out of the spotlight for years.

She described fame as a “golden cage” and since 2003 has virtually disappeared from public life. She focused on raising her six children and became involved in religious studies and spiritual mentoring to live the “real” life she aspired to. She began to gain a reputation for being difficult to deal with, reflecting her contempt for the norms of the music industry, demanding to be addressed as “Ms. Hill.”

Although she released only one studio album, in 1998, she continued to perform. She did not retire from music entirely, but she shed the “character” Lauryn Hill that the world expected her to be.
