Welcome to 2025: Game Time!

PXL_20241224_192827745.jpg

I was really tempted to use this post to talk about my HIVE goals for the year. I know a lot of people are probably doing that between yesterday and today. Instead, I decided to save that post for Friday. It might be a couple of days late compared to everyone else, but it fits really well with my Friday Finance theme.

In the United States, games seem to have a close association with the holiday season. Perhaps it's the number of sporting events that you find on television this time of year. Maybe it's just the fact that you find yourself getting together with family and friends and you need something to pass the time. Then again, it could be the fact that those reindeer get to play games in that song and we don't want to feel left out.

My in laws always get together and do our big Christmas thing on Christmas Eve. Then on Christmas Day we have breakfast together and just spend the day lounging around and watching games on TV or playing them ourselves. For the last couple of years the adults have staged games for the kids to play. We buy some prizes and give them some tasks to do.

You can see that in the opening photo. Videos of families playing these and similar games are pretty common on social media these days.

Hues and Cues

My sister in law from Ohio picked up a game that is quite popular right now called Hues and Cues. I got the chance to play it on Christmas Day while we were waiting for dinner and it was actually a pretty fun game to play.

Each turn there is one person who draws a card. They have four colors on the card and they get to pick the one they want to try and describe. From there, they get one word to try and explain to the others what color they picked. You can't use items in the room, and you can't reference the color itself.

After everyone goes around the circle and places their piece on the hue they think you are referencing, you then get two words to try and describe your color and everyone goes around the circle again.

PXL_20241225_204722749.jpg

Once you have went around the table twice, you place a nine square grid on the board with the color you picked in the center. If someone picked your exact color, they get three points. Anyone else in the square gets two points. If they are touching the square, but just outside of it, they get one point.

The person who picked the color then gets a single point for every player piece inside of the square.

PXL_20241225_204728893.jpg

For each point you get, you then move your third play piece through the black and gray play slots until you get to the end. First player to 50 wins. Like I said, it's a really fun game and although you are playing against other people, you also want them to be on the same page as you when you are the "picker" so that you can get as many points as possible.

I have to admit, it was really hard to think of one or two words to use for the specific color that you are looking at. I really struggled with that when it was my turn to be the picker. I think it took me a good five minutes to come up with my two word phrase.

Actually, thinking back now, the two words don't have to be a phrase, but that is how I was viewing it. In reality, I think they just need to be two different words than the one word you used in the first round.

Path of Exile II

I've been looking for a new game to play for quite some time now. I was looking at Diablo 4, but I didn't want to spend the $70 to $80 they were asking for it. Someone else suggested that I should look at Baulder's Gate III. While that looked appealing, the price was still a bit more than I wanted to spend my money on.

The other day I saw a post by @themarkymark that referenced Path of Exile II. I had heard of the original Path of Exile, but I had only played it briefly. I thought that PoE2 was already out, but it turns out it is just early access right now. I started looking into it and I decided to pull the trigger.

For early access you have to spend at least $30 USD for a package. I didn't really want to spend the money, but it felt better than the $80 I was looking at for Diablo 4. After digging around a bit more, I discovered that PoE2 actually accepts a wide range of payment options.

Most notably one of them being Crypto.com Pay. I have a Crypto.com account, so that seemed quite appealing to me. I also had some USDC sitting in my MetaMask wallet, so I moved that over to Crypto.com, then I used Crypto.com Pay to buy one of the early access packs to PoE2.

It was a pretty slick process and in less then ten minutes I had access to download the game. On top of that, I didn't use any of my hard earned fiat to purchase it. In fact, the money I used for PoE2 was actually gains I had taken from some PEPE token I bought a while ago.

The game is pretty big at close to 100 GB and it took me most of the afternoon to get it installed and tweaked the way I want it, so I didn't really get to play it too much before I left work. I am really looking forward to digging into it more. So far the graphics are looking really good and I know there is a huge community that is quite hyped about this game.

Hues and Cues looks like great fun man, I'll have to keep an eye out for that here in Ireland.

I'd like to come up with a boardgame.

Patent it.

Sell it to the masses.

Take over the world!

Some day... 🤣

0.00330914 BEE

No kidding right? Just think about the guy who made Flappy Bird, sold it for $.99, but when millions of people buy it, the price becomes kind of irrelevant!

We played some games over Xmas when the family was all together. There's one called Herd Mentality where you have to guess the most popular answer to a question. There's also a card game called Newmarket based on horse race betting. We play for chocolates. I hardly watched any TV over the holidays as we were busy anyway.

Happy new year!

New Market sounds like a really cool game. I am going to have to check that one out. We have a horse racing board that we pull out from time to time.

That one just needs cards. It's named after a racecourse.

According to Wikipedia it's called Michigan in the US.

Nice one Steeve, sounds like a great Christmas to me 👍

Hues & Cues? I've never heard of it but that means absolutely nothing... I find that I'm not up to date a lot anymore! I hope Path of Exile 2 turns out to be a great game, and this time I actually know a little about the game. Let me know how you like it!

0.00071246 BEE

PoE2 has been pretty cool so far, but the play style is a bit different than what I am used to. It's going to take me a while to figure it out.

We have few games at some shopping mall, but they charges heavenly enough. I prefer not to spend unnecessarily....good to see you enjoyed some great times...have funfilled year ahead.

0.00071101 BEE

Games aren't cheap these days. Some of the more complex ones cost just about as much as a video game.

0E-8 BEE

Oh yess! I love it 😆 also in Italy we like playing games during the holidays, mostly card games and board games. It's one of the most beautiful things about this period of the year! Thanks for sharing with us 😊

Games are always a bit fun and families have certain dynamics that make them even more interesting. We usually have a really good time, but there is always a bit of frustration too when people are too busy talking to take their turn!

0E-8 BEE

I love using crypto to pay for things, it doesn't really seem like spending money 🤣

0.00071048 BEE

I totally agree with you there!

0E-8 BEE

I'm glad you got to spend time with your family I love doing these types of games. I just got into Magic and streaming warzone so I think I'm gamed out for a bit.

0.00070489 BEE

It happens sometimes. This is the first gaming I have done in a while besides Splinterlands.

0E-8 BEE

Cool Game! Sounds fun yet pretty difficult I would imagine.
The best part is when you look around the room and see everyone having a great time together.

0.00070851 BEE

Yeah, it is a fun game. It's only difficult to think up words to say. The overall concept of the game isn't too bad. I picked up on it pretty quickly.

0.00001529 BEE

Great family fun, where kids and adults can play together.

When I was a young child my Uncle John used to have everybody over (everybody meant any relative who didn't have someplace else to go) at Christmas and New Years Eve. He'd pull out a penny jar and assembled guests (including children) would sit around a large dining room table to play cards. Nobody ever seemed to care very much about the outcome. It was being together that mattered.

Your pictures reminded me of those long-ago days.

0.00070585 BEE

I'm glad I could remind you of some happy times! It sounds like it was a wonderful way to celebrate the holidays!

0.00001455 BEE

Most families now celebrate Christmas Eve at home with their loved ones. What makes the evening different is that everyone is together, there are snacks and games to play. Of course, we can also count the entertaining programs broadcast on television screens. The most enjoyable part of the Hues and Cues game is that it is a fun game based on competition. Family members guessing the colors and trying to match these colors with whom determines the course of the game. We can also say that this game is the best board game.
Happy New Year :)

0.00055372 BEE

It's a great time of year.

That game looks great! I think I might have a look around for it and see if it is available here - thanks! :D
