With the wildfires in Canada once again sending copious amounts of smoke and haze down into the midwestern part of the United States, I thought I would shift gears once again and put my Rock and Roll Hall of Fame posts on hold. This week for #threetunetuesday sponsored by @ablaze, there is going to be less of a theme and more of a funny story for the three songs I am going to share with you.
That isn't to say they aren't tied together, but the way they are tied together is likely something you won't see coming.
If you have been following me for any amount of time, you probably already know that during the late Spring, Summer, and early Fall, @mrsbozz and I enjoy hitting the great outdoors and camping. If you have ever been camping, I think you would agree that one of the staples of a good camping trip is a nice roaring fire. Even when the humidity is high and the temps are crazy high at night, we usually still have a campfire.
There is just something about sitting around the fire, listening to good music, drinking good drink, and enjoying time with friends that makes it special. Even though they were basically just trying to survive, I am sure even the cavemen appreciated sitting around a fire at least a little.
Unfortunately, along with fire comes smoke which generally isn't much fund. As I said, the sky is a virtual haze right now where I live due to the wildfire smoke. Likewise, while camping, it never fails that someone has to move their chair at least once as the wind shifts and the smoke starts blowing in their face.
People will tell you to say things like "I hate white rabbits", or "mother mary mueller", but logic tells us that's a bunch of BS. It's actually one such occasion that is the inspiration for todays post.
We just happened to be sitting around the campfire one evening when @diamonddave's wife mentioned that the smoke was getting in her eyes. I immediately said "ooh, good song", thinking back to the classic above from the Platters. I've always enjoyed this song, but even more so since it played a prominent part in the movie "Always" starring Richard Dreyfus and some other folks. It's a classic 80's movie and it is actually a remake of an older movie called "A guy named Joe" or something like that.
As I said, the song plays a pretty major role in the movie and no matter what happens, I will always associate the two with each other. If you haven't seen it, you should fix that!
The funny part of the story is, our good friend isn't that good with songs. That isn't to say she isn't musical, she can play the piano and things like that, but she often gets songs and lyrics mixed up. As you will see, with some pretty humorous results.
She started singing what she thought was "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", but it took me a while to figure out where she was going. The tune was way wrong and the song was all over the place.
@mrsbozz came out from doing something in her trailer and I told her what was going on. She immediately figure that our friend was trying to sing "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple given the fact that the song was about "Smoke". I have to admit, I can see the connection for sure, but honestly, that would have been too easy. The theme just fits too well and it's an obvious jump from one song to the other.
I'll probably never know how her mind works, but the jumps our friend makes are usually more obscure and while my brain follows some weird logic sometimes, I still struggle to follow hers. Looking back now, I can kind of see how she made the connection she did, but man, it's quite a stretch.
If you guessed "Riders on the Storm" by The Doors was the tune she was using for "Smoke gets in your Eyes", you are a far better person than me. I actually had to just sit and laugh for a good half hour before I could think of anything to say. Have you ever seen that commercial where Peyton Manning and Brad Paisley sing everything to the tune of the Nationwide jingle? "Nationwide is on your side"...
Well, that's exactly what our friend did in this case. She took the line riders on the storm and since the word "riders" has two syllables, she easily slid "smoke gets" into that space and then filled in the tune with the rest of the words. You're singing it in your head right now aren't you?
This past weekend when we were sitting around the fire we actually had another good laugh about the whole thing. Oddly enough, as closely as I associate the song "Smoke gets in your eyes" with the movie "Always", I will likely also now always associate it with the song "Riders on the storm" as well.
Pretty funny right?!

Out loud here!
You go!
Smoky days, smoky tunes and missing your smoky grills... no camping is complete without a fire, it just makes the ocassion too warmer....stay safe with smoky eye.
Thanks! It is definitely a necessity!
What a brilliant selection you bring us to evoke fond memories!
I haven't listened to them in a while. Thanks!
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Nicely done! I love all three songs, especially Deep Purple and The Doors. I love both bands! Excellent choices for the smoky TTT!
I love a campfire too, I think we as humans all do. Probably from genes that developed in our early ancestors who used the fire to keep away predators. How thick is the smoke from the Canadian fires? It's miserable to have to breath in smoke all day long. It does make for beautiful sunsets though!
Today it wasn't bad, but yesterday it was kind of rough. I have a photo my wife took where you can barely see the bridge in front of you because of the smoke.
Sorry for the Canadian smoke getting in your sensitive eyes. !LOLZ
Good choice of tunes, btw.
How long do we wait for the tariffs on smoke?

I have my own personal opinions on wildfires. They should be writing the letter to the jet stream if they really want to pinpoint the culprit!
yeah! no kidding !LOLZ

Are these Canadian wildfires an annual thing now that affects you?
Yes, it would seem so!
We don't go camping other than in our backyard :) But we do have lots of great fires in our backyard, like every other week...
When we moved we switched to a propane fire pit for our home. It's a good balance between for us as we get wood fires when we camp and then gas fires the other times.
