Natural Inspiration

I've been trying to do a better job lately of capturing images from the world around me. It's not that I haven't in the past. In fact, if you follow my blog you are probably familiar with some of the shots I have taken during my various camping trips and other travels. It's actually pretty rare that I get many photos of people aside from the occasional selfie of myself or @mrsbozz.

@foxkoit has been taking some pretty cool macro shots lately and as I said, it has inspired me to open my eyes a bit more and take some photos that I can share here with you.

The one above I took on my way into work the other day. Sadly, the photo doesn't do the sunrise justice. The sun was much larger than it looks in the sky and it was a deep magenta color. It was pretty amazing to see. Perhaps one day I will be able to figure out the settings I need to have my smartphone capture all the colors properly.

I'm fairly lucky that about 1/3 of my commute each morning takes me towards the East. That means I get to see some pretty spectacular sunrises on my way in to work in the summer.

This guy was hanging on the wall outside my office window the other day. I almost didn't notice it because of how it blends in with the brick on the outside of the building. It seemed pretty docile and I was actually able to get quite close to it to take some better photos.

I'm not really sure what you even calls this besides a moth, but he was quite large. As you can see he was just the full height of a brick if not a little bigger. It almost looks fuzzy or furry doesn't it? I didn't feel like disturbing the moth, so I didn't try touching it to find out.

I tried to get a shot from a different angle, but I didn't want to give the moth reason to fly away so I didn't get a view from head on like I was hoping.

I haven't seen the moth again since that day, but I am sure it is still hanging around somewhere. Unless of course one of the seagulls ate it or something. We have tons of them around here given our proximity to Lake Huron.

Believe it or not, not two days later I was walking from my office to another door outside and I saw these two characters hanging out on one of the other walls. If they were people they likely would have gotten some kind of ticket for public indecency. I can only imagine what they were doing here.

They didn't seem to mind too much my random clicking, so perhaps they are seasoned exhibitionists or some kind of bug porn stars. Who knows. I can't recall ever having seen a bug like this before though. I'm not saying this is the case, but I was reading up the other day on some of the invasive species that have made their way to our neck of the woods and it is quite scary and concerning.

It looks like the phone had a little trouble understanding what to focus on with that last shot. My goal was to try and get a side view of the two bugs hanging out together. That was about a week ago now and I haven't seen these bugs again since then. Perhaps one of them killed the other after they were finished, or... seagulls.

This past weekend, I spent some time napping around our campsite. We got these new chairs a while ago and unless you can find somewhere to put your feet up, it isn't really easy to take a nap in them. Luckily, the fire pit was cool enough from the night before, so I used that.

As I was sitting there, a robin kept pacing back and forth picking through the leaves trying to find worms. I think it must have had a nest nearby and it was looking for food. It was one of our constant companions over the weekend along with a nice cardinal that I could never get close enough to for a shot.

A bit later into my nap, I was awakened by some more rustling in the leaves. A squirrel and a chipmunk had made their way near where I was sitting and they were foraging for food. I tried to remain as still as possible and get some shots. The squirrel you can probably see in the center of the photo. The chipmunk is just to the left of him.

Here is a blown up if not grainy shot for you. I couldn't move around too much to zoom in because I didn't want to scare them away. After a short time, something behind me scared them off. It was probably someone walking their dog down the road in the campground.

I'm sure they had to know the other was there, but they didn't show it. There was absolutely zero interaction between the two critters. They just went about their business and although they were inches apart, they didn't let it hinder them.

About halfway through the day today we head off on another adventure and I am looking forward to seeing what new shots I can capture to share with you here! It's supposed to be a bit rainy, so it could just be a lot of me sitting under my trailer awning watching the rain fall!
