Mississippi Mud

It's interesting that just last week we were talking about Minnesota where the Mississippi River starts and now this week we are going to be talking about the state of Mississippi. I was doing a bit of research, and it turns out that the Mississippi River had its name long before the state was ever created. Mississippi comes from the Ojibwe/Algonquin word Misi-ziibi which means "Great River" or "Father of Waters".

As I said in my post last week, I have never been to the headwaters of the Mississippi, but I have a feeling it looks something like the photo above. Perhaps with a little less water. From what I have seen in photos, it really doesn't amount to much, but it is still impressive to think that such an amazing river has such a humble start. It puts a lot of things in perspective to be honest.

As you might imagine, we are nearly halfway through our list of states, and this week we find ourselves at Mississippi. I've actually not been looking forward to this #threetunetuesday sponsored by @ablaze for a while now. Mostly because it is just so tedious to type out the word Mississippi so much. It's not one of those words that I can just throw out there and know I am going to be okay, I actually have to think about it as I type it and that makes it a bit more annoying.

In addition to that, I had a feeling it was going to be hard to find songs that have Mississippi in the title or lyrics. Don't get me wrong, there are a ton of them, but if you really listen, the majority of songs like that are actually referring to the river, not the state. Which might be a technicality, but it still kind of bugs me. Despite all of that, I am not even going to try and differentiate them this week. The songs I am going to share are in the vein of "you get what you get and you don't throw a fit". If you have a problem with a song being about the river versus the state, you can move along thank you very much! :)

I don't believe I have ever visited the state of Mississippi. I have crossed over the river several times in my life, but I can't think of a single time that I ever had the opportunity to visit the state. There was a Summer that we went down and visited one of my dad's old Navy buddies down in Oklahoma, and I think we were close to the border when we passed through Arkansas, but I don't think we ever crossed over into Mississippi. I'd have to ask my parents about that.

I'm pretty sure a couple of the songs I am going to share with you today I have shared in the past, but after so many years of doing this challenge, that is bound to happen. Again, you will just have to deal with it!

The first song is "Mississippi Queen" by the band Mountain. I know I have shared this song before, but it's just such a good song that I don't feel bad about it at all. Mountain is one of those bands that should have been really big, but they just never really got the chance. My wife and I were driving somewhere a while ago when this song came on and I asked her to look up on Google why Mountain didn't have more success than they did. Turns out it was due to a lot of things, but mostly can be blamed on some key errors by the management of the band.

Most importantly, they were offered a spot on the main stage at Woodstock, but the manager didn't think the festival was going to be that big of a deal, so he declined. It's a shame, because this song rocks so hard and I think they really could have had something special if they had been given more of a chance.

Of course, is is only natural that I would include "Black Water" by the Doobie Brothers in this post. Again, it's referring more to the river, not the state, but it technically has the name of the state in the lyrics, so it counts. One of the first concerts that @mrsbozz and I ever went to together was the Doobie Brothers. She got the tickets for me as a gift for my birthday and it was a really good time. I remember at the time she couldn't decide if she should get me tickets for The Doobie Brothers or the Allman Brothers. I think either way it would have been a winner. It was a fantastic show. Frampton opened for them, so you can't really complain about that right?!

Finally, though you have perhaps heard the previous two songs countless times, this third song is likely one you have never heard before. In fact, I am not even sure I have ever heard it before this week. At least I don't recollect it. I am a huge fan of Neil Diamond, so when I saw he had a song called "New Orleans" that has the word Mississippi in it, I knew I had to include it in this post.

It actually comes from an older album with some of his bigger hits on it as well as a few covers. it's crazy to think he used to be that young and there is something about his voice when he was younger that really adds an extra edge to the songs. You can tell this one is a bit older because it has that kind of 50's 60's bop vibe to it. Like the old kind of bop, not the way the term is used these days!

It's still a really cool song and it definitely brings out the soulful tone that Neil's voice has.

So there you go, another state down. Check back in a week to see where the road trip takes us next!

Ironically the only one I have heard is the Neil Diamond one. Mrs T's mother is a huge fan.
