Perhaps the New Ranked System Is Doing the Weekend Work

A Big Hello to all WOO Fans! 🥳🥳🥳 WOO!

One of the funny things about WOO is that I sometimes find myself trying to explain why there is no big weekend activity, only to realise that the game may not actually need one. This weekend, the obvious excuse is sitting right in front of us because Ranked has just received a major update. Maybe the new Ranked system is doing the weekend work for us.

I have gotten some feedback that reminders are pretty useful when it comes to the regular events held in WOO. So here I am again with a quick reminder for any upcoming events.

The biggest change is that Ranked no longer depends on two players being online and searching for a match at the same time. That was always going to be a tricky situation for a game with players spread across different countries and time zones. Someone could be ready to play while everyone else was asleep, at work or simply doing something else. Async Ranked changes that completely.

Now a player can build a Ranked Show, lock in their wrestlers and cards, submit everything and leave. Their Show can remain pending for up to 24 hours, waiting for another eligible player to become the Challenger. That means the competitive side of WOO can keep moving even when the community is not gathered together at the same time.

So perhaps there is no need for WOO to throw a giant weekend event at us this time around. The Ranked Ladder itself has become the activity.

I can imagine plenty of players logging in, checking the pending Shows and deciding whether they want to take the next fight. Someone else might have created their Show several hours earlier without knowing who would eventually challenge them. The Challenger then gets the same match budget and has to build a lineup without knowing the Promoter, their wrestlers or their strategy.

That creates its own little weekend drama.

There is no need for a special announcement saying, “Come and play this event at 8pm.” The Show is already waiting. There is no need for everyone to gather at once. There is no need to search through a lobby for the opponent who looks easiest to beat. The system simply keeps feeding eligible Ranked Shows into the ladder.

From a fan perspective, that actually makes this a rather interesting time for WOO to be quiet. The game has just changed the way competitive matchmaking works, so perhaps this is the weekend where everyone gets to see what happens when the system is allowed to run naturally.

Maybe the best weekend activity is not always another tournament, another special reward or another community event. Sometimes it is simply giving players enough space to experiment with a new feature and figure out their own strategies.

So yes, I am going to use this as another completely unofficial explanation for the quiet weekend. WOO has not forgotten about the weekend. WOO has simply handed the weekend over to Ranked.

And judging by the mystery of not knowing who is waiting on the other side of that next Show, that might be enough entertainment by itself.

TLDR: This is a reminder to all my readers (and WOO fans) that baring any last minute sudden surprise events, this weekend should be a relatively quiet one. 😜
