Build Your WOO Show and Walk Away

A Big Hello to all WOO Fans! πŸ₯³πŸ₯³πŸ₯³ WOO!

There is something strangely satisfying about the idea of building a wrestling show, locking in your lineup, and then simply walking away from the computer. That is probably the easiest way I can describe the biggest practical change coming to WOO Ranked Gameplay.

Previously, Ranked matchmaking depended on another player being there at roughly the same time. That sounds perfectly reasonable when you describe it in one sentence, but online games are rarely that simple. WOO players can be in completely different countries, with completely different daily routines. The person who wants to play Ranked at 10 in the morning might be on a completely different schedule from the person who is available at 10 at night.

Async Ranked removes that dependency.

Instead of needing both players to meet inside the matchmaking queue, WOO allows one player to become the Promoter and create a Ranked Show that waits for someone else to answer the challenge.

I actually think the word "Show" is quite fitting here because the process feels more deliberate than simply clicking a matchmaking button and waiting for another name to appear.

You are effectively putting your lineup on the card.

WOO generates the match conditions, including your random match budget, and you then have to decide how you want to spend that budget. You build your team, select your wrestlers and cards, and eventually submit everything.

Once you submit, your Show becomes pending.

That means your work is done for the moment.

You don't have to keep searching. You don't have to keep the game open. You don't have to wait for another player to appear immediately. Your Show simply sits there waiting for an eligible challenger.

I think this could completely change the way some players approach Ranked.

Consider someone who only has a few short windows during the day when they can play. Maybe they have enough time in the morning to build their Show, but they know they won't have another opportunity until the evening. Under the old system, that might have meant waiting until evening and hoping someone else was available.

With Async Ranked, that player can build their Show in the morning and let somebody else find it later.

That is a very different experience.

It also means players don't have to coordinate their schedules. There is no need for one player to say, "I'll be online at eight, are you?" The Show itself becomes the meeting point.

The interesting part is that the person challenging it does not get to inspect it first.

When your Show is pending, you can see information such as the match budget, venue, number of locked cards, your submitted wrestlers and the remaining time before the Show expires. What you cannot see is the identity of the person who will eventually challenge you.

And the Challenger doesn't get to see your lineup either.

That creates an interesting strategic situation.

When I think about competitive games, one of the things I enjoy most is having to make decisions with incomplete information. If I know exactly what my opponent is bringing, I can start building a direct counter. If I don't know, I have to trust the strategy I prepared before seeing the opposition.

Async Ranked deliberately creates that second situation.

The Promoter has to build their team without knowing who will challenge them.

The Challenger has to build their team without knowing who created the Show or what roster they submitted.

Neither side gets the luxury of shopping around for a convenient opponent.

That is important because otherwise the asynchronous system could have become little more than an opponent selection tool. Imagine being able to browse pending Shows and choose the one that looked easiest. That would change the competitive nature of Ranked pretty quickly.

Instead, WOO uses FIFO matchmaking, meaning First In, First Out.

When you become a Challenger, WOO automatically assigns the oldest eligible pending Ranked Show that you did not create.

I like the simplicity of that.

You press Play Ranked and WOO tells you what fight you're taking.

There is no browsing through six different players. There is no deciding that one opponent looks too dangerous. There is no searching for the weakest lineup available.

You take the next eligible Show.

That also gives players an incentive to create Shows because there is a natural flow between Promoters and Challengers. If nobody has created a Show, someone has to become the Promoter. If there are Shows waiting, other players can step in and become Challengers.

There is a nice rhythm to that system.

Build the Show.

Leave it waiting.

Someone else takes the fight.

Then the match is completed.

The 24 hour expiry period is also important because it prevents this process from becoming messy. Once your Show is posted, the selected wrestlers and cards remain locked. If you sell, transfer, undelegate or level up a locked NFT, the pending Show will be cancelled.

You can also manually cancel the Show while it is waiting.

Once a Challenger confirms their team, though, the match becomes locked.

That gives both players a clear commitment point.

I think this is one of those WOO updates that could seem less exciting than a flashy new feature at first glance, but potentially have a much bigger impact on how people actually play the game. There is nothing particularly glamorous about solving a matchmaking problem. It doesn't necessarily create a giant headline moment.

But if players can log in whenever they have time and reliably participate in Ranked, that improves the everyday experience.

And everyday improvements are often the ones that matter most over time.

For me, Async Ranked makes WOO feel a little less like a game that requires everyone to be present at the same moment and a little more like a game that can keep moving even when everyone is playing at different times.

The Show is waiting.

You can build it now.

Someone else can answer it later.

That is the whole idea, and sometimes the simplest ideas are the ones that make the biggest difference.

Well, that's it for today. We will continue again tomorrow! 😁 WOO! πŸŽ‰
