When creativity and culture meet

(edited)

Hello, lovely people @Diyhub and hive users.
For this contest I'm glad to introduce you all to the crochet transformation of the Yoruba bùbá attire.

The Yoruba bùbá is a traditional blouse worn by women in the southwestern part of Nigeria.
The bùbá is the most essential part of Yoruba culture. It is usually paired with an “ìró” (wrapper) and a "gèlè" (head tie).
And it is often worn during special occasions and cultural celebrations.

As a crochet artist, I decided to blend tradition and creativity. And with yarn, hook, and crochet technique, I was able to recreate this beautiful bùbá blouse.

This beautiful piece did not just represent my honor for the cultural heritage of the yorubas—it also reflects my love for handmade crafts.

Materials used:

📌 Yarn

📌 3.0mm hook

📌 Scissors

📌 Darning needle

📌 Stitch marker.

Note: As a crochet artist, before starting any project, it is very important that we decide on a crochet technique/pattern.

In the procedure, I will be giving a step-by-step guide on the crochet technique I used to achieve this cultural attire.

Here are words you will come across more often: Double crochet, single crochet, third loop, chain, turn over.

Procedure:

STEP 1: I chained 13.

STEP 2: In the third loop of the second chain, I placed a single crochet.

STEP 3: I repeat 1 single crochet in the third loop of each chain across the row.

STEP 4: I turned over my work, and I placed 1 double crochet in the first 2 stitches, I chained 1, and I skipped one.

Then I placed 1 double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches.

I repeat the same technique until the end of row 2.

STEP 5: I turned over, and I placed 1 single crochet in each stitch and 1 single crochet in the chain 1 space.

I repeat the process until the end of row 3.

STEP 6: I repeated steps 4 and 5. And that's basically the technique I used to achieve this blouse.

Now knowing the technique, the first thing I did was the back panel of the blouse using my measurements.

I divided my measurement into the back and the front panel of the blouse. So I started with the back panel, and I stopped at my desired length.

Then I did the same for the front panel and stopped at my desired length where I shaped the neck line of the blouse.

Trust me when I say that shaping the neckline of the blouse was the challenging part for me.
I frogged (redo) over and over again and I got it right on the 8th attempt.

But I'm glad I didn't let that stop me because I almost gave up.
After getting the neckline, I marked each side with a stitch marker and I added a few more rows to increase the length and then I joined both sides to the back panel.

I separated the armhole from the body of the blouse with a stitch marker and I joined both sides of the blouse.

And finally the last part which is the easiest, sweetest and yarn consuming part of the blouse is the sleeves.
I used the same crochet technique to achieve the sleeves and if you look closely at the brim of the sleeves I did a little trick just to add a unique detail.

I used a different technique called ** THE SHELL STITCH.**
I promise to share the procedure in my next DIY post.

And lastly the **The ìborùn (shawl).
To honest is wasn't part of the initial plan but half way into this beautiful blouse I remembered the cultural attire is not complete without the ìborùn (shawl).

I used the same crochet technique for the blouse to achievethe ìborùn (shawl) and also I used the shell stitch to add uniqueness to the brim.

Thank you all for stopping by.
I'm glad I could imagine and crochet this traditional bùbá blouse—preserving the cultural significance.
I will really appreciate your thoughts in the comments section.
