In 2023, Invennium Corporation was created by the team behind Splinterlands to create sports themed NFT games under Genesis League Sports (GLS). GLS is a play-to-earn gaming platform and ecosystem specifically designed for sports games and NFTs. Similar to Splinterlands, players can collect, trade, and compete using NFT cards.

One of the flagship games within the GLS ecosystem is Genesis League Goals (GLG), a turn-based soccer strategy game where players can create their own teams, play in matches, and earn rewards. The game is fast-paced where players can earn tokens and NFTs.

In GLG, players collect NFT-based cards, build and manage teams, and compete in head-to-head matches.

Gameplay

Team Composition

A team is composed of seven players, consisting of two defenders, two midfielders, two forwards and one goal keeper. There are also up to five substitutes, and up to ten reserve players. Players can also select a coach card to provide in-game boosts. If you're familiar with Splinterlands, the coach is the summoner and the players are his units. Each player card has his own statistics that determine his success in the game.

Game Mechanics

This is a bit different from Splinterlands. Games are turn-based, with each turn representing a player can pass, dribble or shoot within a certain time. Success depends on player stats, morale, synergy, and coach rules.

Player Cards

Player cards have upgradeable stats and can be enhanced with skills and equipment, allowing for unique team strategies.

Testing the Game

Currently, player cards are blanks but the game initially planned to have a partnership with Major League Soccer Players Association (MLSPA). This feature is suspended for now but it may come back soon.

The game is fast paced and my test opponent is good. He always blocks my attempts and he eventually scored two goals. I lost the game 0-2.

Final Thoughts

I played Sorare NBA before and I thought it would be like this. It's very different that you actually play the game unlike in Sorare where scores are based on player's real life performance. On the other hand, I can see Genesis League Sports being the Sorare on the Hive blockchain with GLG as its first game. Maybe soon there will also be basketball, baseball and other sports.

On GLG itself, the game could probably have some room for improvements. I'm not much of a soccer fan though so I didn't enjoy the game as much. Also, having actual player images will appeal more to soccer fans so I hope this feature gets implemented again soon.
