From Copra to Coconut Husks: How Coconut Farming Helps Our Family Every Day

Hello everyone! Living a simple life on the farm has taught me many important lessons about hard work, teamwork, and being resourceful. We may not have a luxurious life, but I am thankful because God always provides for our family through the blessings around us. One of the crops that truly helps our family is coconut. It has become one of our sources of income and also helps us in our daily living.

Every month, we harvest coconuts and make copra from them to support our family’s needs. Aside from the copra, even the coconut husks are very useful. We use them as firewood whenever we cook food at home. Because of this, we no longer need to buy gas regularly since there are many things around the farm that we can still use. Farm life really teaches me how to save money and be practical in life.

Tomorrow is my daughter’s birthday, so we needed extra firewood for cooking. Since many coconut husks were already very dry, we decided to gather them because they are perfect for cooking. My husband carried and tied the sacks while my daughter and I filled them with dried coconut husks. We worked together under the heat of the sun, but it felt lighter because we were helping each other.

I also want to teach my daughter the importance of helping at home even while she is still young. She thought we were only playing, but little by little she is learning how to help in simple ways. She even carried her own small sack and happily placed the coconut husks inside it. Seeing her enjoy helping us made me smile because I know she is learning good values through these simple experiences.

After working for some time, we were able to fill around eight sacks of dried coconut husks. For others, it may only look like ordinary farm work, but for me, it is already a big blessing. Those sacks will help us cook food for several days, especially during our small birthday celebration tomorrow.

Life on the farm is not always easy because the weather is hot and the work can be tiring, but it also keeps us active and healthy. Most importantly, it teaches me to appreciate simple things and to value the blessings that surround us every day. We need to do hard work in every task in life.

It is always a feeling good to contribute something at home esp when i was i child when my mom used to train me to do the dishes and the laundry every weekend when there is no class.

In my place, coconut is expensive, I had a chitchat with a vendor last week and I couldn't believe that their daily income is larger than I and my sister's income put together 😅 this is a kind of work that's really worth it, at night, when you finally hit the sack and feeling that good sore you will realize, every body pain is worth it 👏🏻 keep going 💕

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, it’s a eye-opening to hear how hard vendors work and how their daily income sometimes surpass what they expect, It shows that every kind of honest work has its own value and rewards.

So true sis, we have so much to be thankful for. Sometimes we forget how valuable simple things are, but coconut is a tree of life, as you said everything from it has purpose and use.

0E-8 BEE

That is the advantage of having lot with coconut trees . Coconut can live several decades and can give unlimited coconuts . A lot of possible business of coconuts once you have that .

0E-8 BEE

Yes, having land with coconut trees is a big advantage. They live for many years and continue to produce coconuts which makes them a very sustainable source of income. Noon, hindi pa ako dito nakatira asam na asam ko talaga ang buko juice and bukayo from coconut trees. Now, minsan nalang talaga hehe unless hehe!

I saw myself in you. I grow up helping doing copra, good thing your coconut trees are in a plain land unlike before we have mountainous land. I need to go down to the river to collect the coconuts with snake encounters. Climbed back to go home for lunch then go back gown. My remembrance is my left point finger was cut by the machete{itak} when I cut halves the coconuts.
