Larsen Bay | Kodiak Island

Finally, after a small 85nm (140km) night trip we arrive in Larsen Bay.

It took us about 22 hours to make this trip which was quite slow as we usually do 120nm in 24 hours (one day).

After such a slow and rough passage we really enjoyed the calm bay.

Larsen's cannery

Larsen Bay Cannery was one of the many salmon canneries that operated during Alaska’s booming fishing industry in the early 1900s. Located in the small village of Larsen Bay on Kodiak Island, it was built in the 1910s and became a major employer for locals and migrant workers, including native fishermen and seasonal workers from outside Alaska usually Filipinos and Mexicans .

At its peak, the cannery processed huge amounts of salmon—mostly reds (sockeye) and pinks (humpies)—packing them into tin cans shipped across the U.S. Like many canneries in remote Alaska, it was a company-run operation, meaning outside corporations controlled the profits while locals did much of the hard labor.

Over time, the cannery faced the same struggles as others in Alaska: declining salmon runs, competition from bigger processors, and changes in fishing regulations. It changed ownership multiple times before eventually closing in the late 20th century.

Now this old cannery acts as a storage space for many fishing boats that fish in this region and even a repair station for anything. We were also told that this cannery was to completely shut down next year - and we would probably be the last foreigners to walk through this cannery.

Uyak Marina

A small marina hidden behind a small island, we thought of fueling up in the marina but after small calculations we knew we had enough till Kodiak where we would get cleaner diesel.
