For four days straight, we had humpback whales hanging around us in Bishop Bay. This group apparently spends the whole winter here. We would go to sleep at night and hear them come up to breathe, and if you were quite enough, you could hear them communicating in their high-frequency tones which would vibrate through our hulls.
I got really lucky that I even had the opportunity to fly the drone, as it rained the entire week we were here. Sometimes, I had just 15 minutes when the rain stopped, so I tried to use those wisely. Every time I landed the drone, a big whale would breach 100 metres away from us and create this loud thud that echoed throughout the bay.
Below is a video that shows just some of the whales in the bay. I'm very grateful to have been able to witness these creatures firsthand. I would never get tired of watching the whales for hours.
I hope you enjoyed this post, if you did feel free to upvote and leave a comment.
Until next time,
