It’s only 10 a.m., and rubbish bins are already burning in the city. Security officers are everywhere. Once again, we’re seeing the same groups from the neighbourhood, all dressed in black; some are already well known to the police. Shop windows are being smashed, bins set on fire, and projectiles thrown at the police. Is this really how they think they’ll get the government to listen?

Spoiler: no. Quite the opposite: this kind of violence is more likely to make things worse. After the damage—or, more accurately, the looting—two weeks ago, the consequences are already being felt: car and home insurance premiums are going up, as are prices in some shops. When damage has to be repaired and extra security provided, the costs often end up being passed on to ordinary consumers.

Politically, these events can also strengthen the far right and the far left alike. They weaken the side calling for demonstrations and give its opponents more arguments. In the end, those taking part in destruction risk worsening economic hardship and political tensions without advancing the causes they claim to support. They end up becoming, however unwittingly, “useful idiots” for the system.

In short, this is just my view of what’s happening. People can defend their beliefs and protest against government policies, but violence and destruction primarily hurt residents, shopkeepers, and ordinary citizens who had nothing to do with it.
