There are two kinds of Final Fantasy VIII players.
Those who rush through the story...
And those who spend an hour challenging random people to cards because they know something valuable is waiting.
I proudly belong to the second group. š
In this episode, I took a small detour from saving the world to obtain one of the game's most iconic cards: Zell's Card.
And honestly? It was absolutely worth it.
One of the reasons Final Fantasy VIII remains so unique among RPGs is Triple Triad.
Most games include mini-games as simple distractions.
But Triple Triad is different.
It becomes its own adventure.
You start by collecting cards just for fun, then suddenly you're planning strategies, hunting rare cards, and challenging every NPC you meet.
Before you realize it, you're more excited about finding a new card player than the next dungeon.
To obtain Zell's card, I had to pay a visit to his hometown and challenge someone very special: his mother.
It's one of those details that make the world of Final Fantasy VIII feel alive.
The rare cards aren't hidden inside treasure chests or dropped by powerful bosses.
Instead, they're connected to the people and relationships around the characters.
That small design choice gives these cards so much more personality.
What I enjoy most about Triple Triad is that it rewards thinking rather than grinding.
You don't need stronger weapons.
You don't need higher levels.
You just need a better strategy.
Every turn matters.
Every card placement matters.
And when a rare card is on the line, the pressure becomes surprisingly real.
I may have fought giant monsters in this game...
but losing a rare card match still hurts more. š
Some players see card collecting as optional content.
For me, it's part of the soul of the game.
These little moments create memories.
Years later, I might forget some random battles.
But I still remember searching for rare cards, building my deck, and feeling that satisfaction when a difficult card finally became mine.
That's exactly the feeling I got again in this episode.
š Join me as I obtain Zell's legendary card:
One of the greatest strengths of Final Fantasy VIII is that it constantly rewards curiosity.
Sometimes the reward is a powerful Guardian Force.
Sometimes it's a breathtaking cinematic.
And sometimes...
It's a simple card that somehow becomes one of your favorite memories from the entire adventure.
Today was one of those days.
