There are few cards to fit in low mana battles in Going the Distance ruleset. It's a very limiting ruleset that allows only range units. The ruleset is not much of challenge if you're using the Death splinter with Razi Clanktrap as an archon but for other splinters the lack of decent units is an issue. For Water, the legendary reward card, Sten Slatehelm is one excellent choice. In today's post, we'll do a deep dive into this card.

Lore

Sten Slatehelm is a short (even for dwarves) but fearless dwarf who fights with throwing daggers and a shield. His vision blocking oversized eyebrows gives him a reckless fighting style that even hurts allies as well as enemies. Despite his reckless style, he’s loyal and battle-hardened, following Fithe Bladestone after surviving brutal past conflicts together. In the harsh Great Lowlands, Sten pushes the frontlines forward through fire and ash, holding ground against overwhelming odds. Clumsy but effective, he keeps fighting, ensuring his allies survive even if they take a few hits from him along the way.

Stats and Abilities

Sten Slatehelm is a two mana, legendary, Water card. At maxed levels, he deals two range damage and has three speed. He has good defense of five armor and six health, making him a viable tank in Going the Distance ruleset. As for abilities, he has Close Range at level on. At level two, he gets Reckless, that according to his lore was caused by his overgrown eyebrows. At level three he uses his armor to damage his enemies with Armored Strike. His most powerful ability is at maxed level where he gets Resurgence.

For Silver and Gold players, level one is good enough in my opinion. Level two gets him a debilitation which hurts his allies but could be useful in some situations and with the right combo like units with Painforge. For overall use, it's better to keep him at level one in my opinion.

Due to his stats and abilities, he's a good unit to take the tank role in Going the Distance rulesets especially when the mana cap is limited. He has decent defense to last for a few rounds while his allies do damage to the enemy.

Featured Battle

The battle was in the high level Gold League with Going the Distance and Equalizer rulesets. Player Hepthorn had Sten as his tank and the rest of his team were composed of the following units.

Chaos Battlemage is a legendary reward card from the Rebellion set. She deals three range damage and has Piercing and Resurrect abilities.

Mar Torren Seeker is common card with decent stats. The Poison ability from the archon adds to his offensive kit.

Chaos Lackey is a low mana card with low attack. It's good to fill your slots in Equalizer rulesets even with low attack cards since they provide additional defense.

Drybone Rawdog is another low mana card but deals better damage. He also received the Poison ability from the archon.

Mar Torren Trader is one of the key cards in this battle. She has the Headwinds ability to reduce the enemy's range attacks.

His enemy had the legendary Eternal Tofu archon but came with only three units. This puts him at a disadvantage in Equalizer ruleset. Also, one of his units have eleven health. While it increased the health of his allies, it also does the same for his enemy. The better synergy and play against the ruleset favored Hepthorn and he got the win.
