Hello Splinterlands summoners and welcome back to my blog!
In Splinterlands, buying your initial set of cards and battling with them is not the end of your collecting journey. What makes Splinterlands a fun trading card game is not just the battling part but also the way we can evolve our cards to gain higher stats and new abilities. The set of cards we have now can further be upgraded to give them more power. It also allows us to have access to higher leagues and thus gives us higher rewards. I keep upgrading my deck piece by piece. I even upgrade cards that I don't frequently use because there may come a time or a certain ruleset where they can be key cards. In today's post, I'll talk about two cards I upgraded recently and why: the Caravan Guard and Grimshield Hexpriest.

I have a level one Caravan Guard that just sits in my collection, unused. Looking at its stats, it's unimpressive even at higher levels. The reason I upgraded it to three was get the Triage ability. On its own, its not that powerful but combo it with a unit that has Taunt, then it will sustain your Taunt unit while keeping your other cards safe from attack. The longer the Taunt unit stays in battle, the longer your tank and damage dealers can do their job uninterrupted from attacks. I used this Triage and Taunt ability combo in the Chaos Legion set where there were a lot of units that has the Triage ability like Queen Mycelia, Djinn Renova and Spirit Hoarder.

The Grimshield Hexpriest is a rare Death card from the Escalation set. It's a decent card that I use in Wands Out ruleset if Water or Earth is not available to use. That's why this card's utility is highly situational for me. I had my Grimshield Hexpriest at level three where it has decent defensive stats and the Magic Reflect ability. It's an ideal card to play as tank in Wands Out ruleset especially when it gets the Void ability but that's too far at maxed level. I upgraded it to four to get an additional attack stats. Attack is an important stat in lower leagues where I play. There is not much abilities so raw damage power gives definite advantage. It allows my team to defeat the enemy faster before they can do damage of their own.
Upgrading cards in Splinterlands is fun and makes our collection more competitive. It unlocks the card's abilities as well as gain higher stats. Upgrades brings new abilities and therefore stronger synergies. It makes the game more strategic where card combos bring something new to the gameplay. It makes battles more rewarding, seeing the cards defeat the enemy as well as take advantage of the ruleset.
