Hello Splinterlands summoners. There are multiple roads in the path to power in Splinterlands. One of these is through the way of magic. A magic team has been the meta since the time of Alric Stormbringer, the original magic archon since the beginning of Splinterlands. Alric has moved to the Wild League but a new archon emerged from the Frontier to bring magic back to the Water splinter. This brought change to the Modern mode meta making magic a weapon of choice among players. In today's post, I'll show my line up in creating a team. I'll discuss each team member and how they contribute to the team synergy.

The battle showcases my build of Water magic team. I use the archon from the Frontier set, Marlai Singariel who like the old Arlic Stormbringer buffs the team with an additional magic attack stat. The units will be composed of all magic team or have a tank in the frontline followed by an all magic team. This may sound simple but we should also take into account each team member and what they bring into the battle. We should consider the positioning and their abilities to maximize synergy. Having that in mind, my team was composed of the following units.
Commander Slade is a capable tank to absorb damage. He has six armor and nine mana to fit the role. Not only that, he is also capable on offense boasting of four melee damage and five speed. He has great abilities to complement his offense and defense. He debuffs the enemy tank's attack with Enfeeble and he makes good use of his speed with his Dodge ability. Overall he's a great tank having both offensive and defensive capabilities.
Wailsworn Specter is a recent card from the Conclave Arcana reward set. It brings synergy into the team with its Bloodline Tribute ability. It adds additional stats to attack, speed, armor and defense to all Undead bloodline. I have two Undeads in the team to take advantage of this synergy. The Wailsworn Specter is also great in Equal Opportunity ruleset since it has the lowest health in the team. My strategy was to have it get defeated first and buff the two Undeads in the team, making them more powerful.
The Torrent Sniper is a magic damage dealer but also acts as a secondary tank. It has high health stats of eight making it an ideal unit in second position to take over tank duties once the main tank gets defeated.
Arcane Skinwalker has the Shapeshift ability and benefits from the Bloodline Tribute ability of Wailsworn Specter. Once it dies, Arcane Skinwalkers's stats will increase by one.
Mindless Thrall is an Undead bloodline and will benefit from Wailsworn Specter's Bloodline Tribute. It will also add one to all stats especially attack making it more offensive.
Mystic Scaleweaver is the top legendary card in the Frontier. It deals three magic damage and has the ability to slow down the enemy. My team has an advantage in speed and power.
The enemy team was led by an anti magic archon offsetting the buff given by my archon. The team was composed of a strong tank followed by damage dealers. I also use the build that the enemy had. Kaylia Silverleaf grants the Execute ability to elves. He used a beefy tank in the front, Ulundin Overseer. He has three elves in the team and a Taunt unit in last. His team also has a good synergy but mine took advantage of the Opportunity ruleset.
As expected, my Wailsworn Specter immediately got defeated by one of the enemy's elves. It immediately powered up my Arcane Skinwalker and Wailsworn Specter.
There are a lot of builds and team synergies to choose from. The magic team is just one of these but keep in mind that no build is perfect. You may have the strongest units and synergies but this can still be countered by better strategies. Playing Splinterlands takes thought and careful planning. You can't just lay your strongest cards and keep repeating the same team over and over. Eventually your enemy will figure it out and prepare a team to counter yours. This is what makes Splinterlands a fun game to play.
