Quilliun Legionary: The Ultimate Ranged Tank

Hello Splinterlands summoners and welcome back to my blog! In my previous post, I covered Xulax Nightwind, a gladiator tank that has defense against melee and magic attacks. It's a strong tank but cannot be used in regular battles so I looked for a tank with similar abilities. Here I found the Quilliun Legionary.

Lore

Zuriktal Varsha (Quilliun Legionary) is a mercenary from Mox City who serves the highest bidder, taking on any job without hesitation. After the Chaos Empire conquered Praetoria, he quickly joined their ranks and now abuses his authority to dominate the city. Zuriktal is a formidable fighter who relies on both weapon mastery and brute force, making him a dangerous enforcer few can challenge.

Stats and Abilities

Quilliun Legionary is an eight mana, rare, Earth card that has the abilities that can rival the best gladiator cards out there. His defense against melee and magic attacks make him comparable to Xulax Nightwind. At maxed level, he deals two range damage and has two speed. He has two armor and eleven health on defense. He has Close Range allowing him to play the first position. He also has Thorns that returns damage to melee attackers. His Void ability enables him to decrease enemy magic attacks. Finally, he has Bloodlust that increases his stats each time he defeats an enemy. Bloodlust was an ability exclusive only to gladiator cards but has since been seen in current card sets although not many units possess this ability.

Role in Battle, Rulesets and Combos

The Quilliun Legionary is a versatile unit that can play any position. He is most effective as a tank owing to his abilities. He is a ranged unit but can play the first position due to his Close Range ability. This makes him a key card in rulesets like Going the Distance or Keep Your Distance where he can play tank in both. As with Xulax Nightwind, a healer and a unit with Repair ability will be a great support to him to make him last longer in battles. His armor is a bit low for a tank so a support unit is necessary to maintain it.

Meriput Mossmender

Fellow Rodential and Earth card Meriput Mossmender is a perfect combo to Quilliun Legionary. It can deal magic damage from the backline while providing support by Repairing armor. It's only six mana so it's easy to find slots for this card in your team.

Meriput Magician

Another Rodentian, the Meriput Magician has Tank Heal ability that can sustain Quilliun Legionary's health as the fight goes on. It also has the Strengthen ability that will add health to all allied units while dealing magic damage from the back.

Featured Battle

The battle has a high mana cap of seventy and allowed me to play with some of the new high mana cards that I enjoy playing. My Quilliun Legionary is at level four having both Thorns and Void abilities for defense. In second position was Ulundin Overseer, an eleven mana, no attack tank. It's very beefy with five armor and twelve health at only level one. It's drawback is its lack of attack but the next unit solves that problem. In third position is Shiraza who has the Weapons Training ability that grants two magic power to units without any attacks. This unit is worth its price as it has levelled up my game and gave utility to my other no attack cards. Next is the huge Forlorn Geomant, a thirteen mana card with five magic attack. It wrecks the enemy unit with its high damage. In fifth position I had the Living Berm, another huge card with ten mana and four range attack. Lastly, I had a Taunt unit Silverleaf Mage. It's an elf that benefits from the archons Bloodline Dominion ability, Execute.

The enemy also had the Earth splinter and used an all Conclave Arcana set in his team. He had Folen Flameye on tank and Silverleaf Mage in second. It's a strange choice to position units in my opinion. He had three magic damage dealers and another range card in his team. In the battle, the Quilliun Legionary effectively repelled incoming melee and magic attacks. My damage dealers from the back did their job effectively decimating the enemy while my Taunt unit drew attacks from my tank. My team had the advantage in power and synergy that allowed me to take the victory.

Closing Thoughts

Quilliun Legionary is one of the underrated tanks in the game. He punishes melee attackers while decreasing incoming magic attacks. He's effective in normal battles and shines in rulesets like Going the Distance and Keep Your Distance where it's Close Range and Void abilities make it a key card in these rulesets. He's a versatile unit that can also be positioned in the rear to surprise melee sneak attackers with Thorns. Check him out in the in game market if you don't have him in your deck.
