Buying and Upgrading the Grimshield Hexpriest

Hello Splinterlands summoners and welcome back to my blog!

I bought several copies of Grimshield Hexpriest today and levelled it up from level one to three. It gained two abilities after upgrading and will be one of my trump cards in Wands Out ruleset.

Lore

A knight named Kerith Malen was killed by Palifala’s time magic and buried beneath a crypt. Soon after, reports arrived claiming he had died the same way again and again. The hexpriests opened his crypt, only to find his remains still sealed and untouched. Yet the reports kept coming, each one describing his death as if it were happening anew. Time had been broken, trapping the knight in endless cycles of dying. Others suffered the same across the land, dying and repeating without end.

Stats and Abilities

Grimshield Hexpriest at maxed level deals four magic damage and has three speed. It has four armor and seven health on defense. It boasts of three abilities.

  • Apex Strike - Targets the enemy with the most power.

  • Magic Reflect - Returns 50% of magic damage to attacker.

  • Void - 50% less damage from magic attacks or no damage if attacker deals one magic attack.

My Grimshield Hexpriest is currently at level three but for Silver level players, it's ideal to upgrade it to level four where it increase its magic attack to three and has two abilities.

Rulesets and Combos

The Grimshield Hexpriest is an ideal card in Wands Out ruleset where only magic units are allowed. It's twin abilities of Magic Reflect and Void are great to counter magic attacks. However, he is also useful in normal battles where his Apex Strike will be great to hunt down the enemy who deals the most attack. He can be used with the following units.

Doomshield Warden

Under normal battles, the Grimshield Hexpriest's role is a backline damage dealer. He would need a strong tank like the Grimshield Warden to hold the front line and keep the enemy from attacking the back line damage dealers.

Gravebrand Warlock

The Grimshield Hexpriest can work hand in hand with Gravebrand Warlock in the back line to deal damage against the enemy. In addition, the Warlock adds speed to all allied units making them attack faster and thus can eliminate the enemy before they strike.

Umbral Elemental

Similar to the Gravebrand Warlock, the Umbral Elemental also deals magic damage and provides speed buff to all allies but he does so much more. He has the Taunt ability that draws enemy attacks, especially sneak or snipe attackers away from rear or mid position units. He also has Deflection Shroud ability that grants the Deflect ability to adjacent units.

Lorkus

The best archon to use with Grimshield Hexpriest is Lorkus. He grants additional magic damage to all units. He can also grant powerful Life Leech and Affliction abilities to Grimshield Hexpriest and another unit.

Arachne Weaver

The Arachne Weaver is one of the best support units in the Death splinter. His Corrupted Healing ability is crucial to sustain the team's health. This is specially useful in survival rulesets like Noxious Fumes or Earthquake.

Featured Battle

I immediately tested the Grimshield Hexpriest in battle. The featured battle doesn't really showcase much of his potential due to the Pandemonium ruleset that messed up my positioning. However, he did land in the first position where he reflected magic attacks before he was disposed of.

I paired him with the cards I mentioned above that I have like Gravebrand Warlock, Arachne Weaver and Doomshield Warden who unluckily was placed in the last position.
