Fast Pace, Slow me: A Cultural Adventure

Happy New Year, guyssssssss, we made it!! May this new year be filled with love, peace, joy, and growth.

It’s been a while since I wrote in the Crossculture Community, and I just thought I'd share some cultural shocks I experienced while visiting one of the many cities in my country.

I visited this city a few days ago, a large, beautiful city bursting with activities and everything you can think of in a big city. While taking in all its goodness, nothing prepared me for the incessant rush and chaos.

I visit this city occasionally, but I always had a chaperone or I usually Ubered my way around, so it was pretty easy for me to navigate the city. This time, I decided to do it all alone, more like experience everything without any guide or help, and all I can say is that it is well😂😂

For starters, this city moves so fast, before you can get your act together, they’ve all left you😂 How can people comfortably leave their houses by 5:00 am every day and they see nothing wrong with it? How do you spend so many hours on the road and call it normal?
You don’t only have to be fast, you also have to be smart or risk being played.

Someone told me I should see everyone as a suspect and trust no one, guysss whyyyyy??😂😂

When they say distance is endless, they were talking about this city. You can be in the same city as your friend, but it might seem as though you guys are worlds apart. Commuting can be pretty stressful over here and I hate it.

Some of my friends and I made plans to see each other, but whenever I used my imaginary binoculars to see how long and stressful the trip would be, I always bailed out.

There’s a common assumption that everyone thinks you speak their language here. They don’t need to ask you if you can speak or understand the language; they blast into it and expect you to magically speak and understand. When they finally realize that you can’t speak the language, they feel sorry for you, Lol, like the language is supposed to be a universal language😂

I don’t know about the people over here, but in the city I come from, we all go about our daily activities without being under pressure or incessant rush.

What about you guys reading this post? How do you deal with cultural shocks? I'd love to read your thoughts in the comments!

Welcome 🤗 to Lagos, lol 😂, where everyone has a little madness in them. You'd better be on your way as early as 5 am to beat the traffic, or don't bother leaving your house, hehe.

Have an amazing year Ibbtammy ❣️
