More Than Celebration: The Purpose of Christmas

Good day everyone, you are warmly welcome to my blog, and I must say it's a pleasure to have you here.

The Christmas season is a very special period that touches the lives of many people in different ways. I see it as a festival that almost all Christians usually plan for, thinking about how the celebration will go once it finally arrives.

In the right sense, the Christmas season comes with a particular reason and purpose, but based on my view, I have seen how the season is celebrated with love, kindness, and jubilation in different ways. From how I used to celebrate it from a young age, during my childhood stage, I saw Christmas outfits as a compulsory gift that my parents would buy for me. Once it was bought, I used to rejoice as if I were celebrating my own birthday.

The Christmas festival used to be a very special season for me and my relatives, and we always enjoyed almost every bit of it. Having my loved ones who had traveled abroad come around was always exciting, and once they arrived, they often offered us gifts and many valuable items. Aside from gifts, the Christmas season also caused some of my relatives, who hardly visited home, to travel back and spend quality time with us. Currently, I am no longer much younger, so I no longer see Christmas outfits as mandatory—not anymore. As long as I have the kind of dress I need, whether it is Christmas or not, I am content.

Now, speaking about the meaning of Christmas, the Christmas season is a fixed festival created for all Christians to celebrate, rejoice, and be merry. All these are because of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, who came because of the love He has for mankind and died for our sins so that we may have eternal life. In the right sense, the way Christmas is celebrated in my country sometimes looks like almost everyone is trying to celebrate himself or herself instead of the true purpose of the season.

Yes, showing love, celebrating, being merry, and rejoicing with our neighbors and loved ones are right and very important, but we must not forget the main reason for the celebration—not just by keeping it in mind or saying it out loud, but by showing it through our actions, especially in the decisions we make. If everyone celebrates it as if it is a personal birthday, then it means we are not getting it right, because the true aim of Christmas has not been achieved.

Of course, I have also made my own arrangements on how I will celebrate this season. I hope you have done yours so that no one will be left out. I pray that God will help me so that I do not over-celebrate this Christmas season as if it were my own birthday celebration. In Jesus’ name, amen 🙏.
