Why Discipline Wins Over Motivation.

Good day, people of Hive! Welcome to my blog. Today’s topic is from Hive Reachout, which says, “Discipline Vs Motivation". So let's dive in.

In this life, everyone wants to succeed. We all want to become successful in life. Some people rely on motivation to succeed, while others rely on discipline. I will say motivation is like a tool. It gives us excitement, joy, and energy to start something new. For example, maybe I listen to inspiring stories, motivational videos, or quotes one day; because of that, I will feel like I am ready to do anything. But the truth is that excitement doesn’t last long. Let me use our moods as an example. The way our moods always change—that’s exactly how motivation goes up and down. One day we may feel inspired to do something, and the next day we may feel tired or discouraged. To me, if success is built only on motivation, I won’t lie, it will not last long because the moment we lose that feeling, our progress stops.

Discipline, on the other hand, works in a different way. To me, discipline doesn’t depend on how we feel. It is about doing what needs to be done. Discipline is about setting a routine and following it until it becomes a habit. Even when we are happy, sad, tired, etc., we will still follow the routine. For example, if someone is disciplined, they don’t wait to feel motivated before they act, because it has become a habit due to the fact that they have trained themselves. That’s why I will say discipline is more dependable than motivation.

Let me use two students preparing for an exam as an example. One of them may feel excited at first because of the exam. He or she may start making a study plan and feel motivated for a few days. But when something happens or when laziness sets in, they will stop studying. Meanwhile, the other person may not feel motivated or excited for the exam, but because they force themselves to study every day or night—even when it’s hard, they remain consistent. We know that during exam periods it’s always hectic. By the time the exam comes, we will see that the disciplined one will be better prepared than the motivated one.

Honestly, success comes from doing the right thing at the right time again and again, not just when we feel like it. Motivation can help us begin, but it is discipline that makes sure we continue until we reach our goals. Although I will say the two are connected, discipline is stronger.

I will use myself as an example. I once tried writing a novel. At the beginning, I was very motivated to start because I thought, “What makes some people write novels online and people read them? I will also do it.” But soon the excitement faded, and I started getting too lazy to continue writing. That’s why I know that if I wait for motivation, even though I wish to write my own novel, I might never build the habit. But if I discipline myself to write maybe two or three stories in a week, over time it would become a habit and natural for me.

Motivation is like a stove, while discipline is kerosene. Without kerosene inside the stove, we can never cook. That’s how motivation and discipline are. We can’t always control when we feel motivated, but we can control our discipline.

In conclusion, I will say that when it comes to succeeding in life and growing, discipline is the better choice. Not that motivation is not good, don’t get me wrong, but discipline is better than motivation.

The more you practice your discipline, the easier it is to become motivated.

Both give a positive impact. Sometimes it's hard to stay motivated but discipline goes a long way.
