Kind, Not Naive.

Not to beat around the bush. In respect to this week's prompt, I've actually helped someone who I believed needed it only to later find out that they didn't in any way merit or deserve it. The circumstances surrounding it then didn't give me a chance to think twice or double check. And it's not as if I helped expecting anything in return, not at all. I did it genuinely, and seeing how this person came, I saw the sincerity and decided to give what I could.

It was almost a year later before I got to see the real truth. I wasn't digging around for it, and I wasn't asking anyone about it. Now what happened was that this person actually needed the help, but while discussing with me, they had made the problem/issue look bigger/worse than it actually was. Something like seeking sympathy and trying to really make their story touching so I could extend a very good hand of kindness. It pained me when I knew, not because I helped, but because my kindness was taken advantage of.

And since then, I don't just act all out to help you. Even if you look sincere, sound honest, and all, I will still question you and, to some extent, do some background checks too. One thing I've always said and stand with is that no one has the ability to change the good person that I am. I mean, no one would be able to turn me from being a good/kind person to a bitter one, only if I chose to. But thinking about it, I also feel it's all those series of experiences and all that would later add up together to change you and make you be more careful with helping.

It is very good to help, but the Bible at a place said, "Wisdom is profitable to direct." At another place it said, "In all your getting, get wisdom." What I'm trying to say in essence is that we need wisdom to navigate helping and showing kindness to people. I don't have a well-perfected way of seeing people for who they really are. But I try my best to not rush into helping; I only do when I have adequate info about it. Also, most of the time I feel it's okay to handle the problem directly instead of handing over money.

And while helping, it is important that we take care of ourselves too. It is not bad today, no, sometimes. Yes. It doesn't mean or make you a bad person. So, don't turn bitter because someone has taken advantage of your kindness; rather, be wiser and combine your good heart with it.
