Normally, an average human being dislike work, get use easily to soft life and if he or she sees any means of avoiding responsibilities he will.
Which is why at times being a bit hard and strict is good. Because if you give too much privilege, they might take the whole village. Even at work, most staff tends to abuse some kind privileges especially if the boss is soft or considerate. And privileges at being abuse often in the office might one day run down the organization which is why some boss/ managers are strict.
Even in the school/classroom being too cool on students is a problem because when ones they are use to it, they will abuse it.
I happen to work in an environment where I will call a semi military base. So often work , interact and manage some stuff with some military personnels. And I like the military pattern because it brings steady discipline and respect.
Few weeks ago, I decided to do a little parade drill with some of my students and at a point, they were like feeling tired and struggling to obey a particular instruction. I was not ready to punish or shout at anybody. I quickly handed them to a military personnel and left. I decided to check them again after about 30mins. When I approached them, most of them where saying, "sir please come and take over." I smiled I told them no, that I won't , that the military personnel will continue with them throughout that day. I could see the frustration in their faces.
To me, it was okay and that was the perfect person they needed at that point. And the following day , even without the military personnel, they were so coordinated. So normally, every human easily get use to soft life and if given too much privilege they might abuse it. Therefore , ones in a while expose them to the hard / though side of life. This makes everything blend.
