A Day In My Life: Celebrating IPEd Day at Buhawen Elementary School

Every day in school brings a different experience, but some days leave a special mark in our hearts. One of those memorable days was our celebration of Indigenous Peoples Education (IPEd) Day at Buhawen Elementary School. It was not just an ordinary school activity; it was a meaningful celebration of culture, identity, talents, and the rich heritage of our Aeta learners.

We started the celebration with a short lecture about the importance of IPEd Day. During this session, we discussed why this special day matters, particularly to our Indigenous Peoples (IP) learners. We emphasized the importance of recognizing, respecting, and preserving their culture, traditions, beliefs, and indigenous knowledge. We also reminded everyone that being an Indigenous person is something to be proud of. Their identity is not a limitation but a beautiful part of who they are. As teachers, we have the responsibility to provide an inclusive learning environment where every learner feels valued, respected, and appreciated.

After the short lecture, the excitement continued as we held a pageant for our IPEd learners. This became one of the celebration’s highlights. Our young participants had the opportunity to showcase their confidence, talents, and personalities in front of their teachers, classmates, and fellow learners. Seeing them walk with confidence, smile proudly, and express themselves on stage was truly heartwarming. Some may have felt nervous at first, but as the activity continued, their confidence began to shine.

What made the pageant more meaningful was that it was not simply about winning or receiving awards. It gave our learners a platform to express themselves, discover their abilities, and believe in what they can do. Every participant was a winner in their own way because they showed courage and willingness to take part in the activity.

Of course, no school celebration would be complete without fun and exciting games! We prepared traditional Filipino games that brought laughter and excitement to everyone. One activity was the sack race, where participants hopped toward the finish line while trying to stay balanced. It was amusing to watch them compete, stumble a little, and continue hopping with determination. The audience's cheers and laughter made the game even more enjoyable.

Another exciting activity was Basagang Palayok, also known as Hit the Pot. This traditional Filipino game challenged the participants to find and hit a hanging clay pot while blindfolded. Everyone eagerly watched and cheered as the players tried their luck. The excitement grew with every attempt, making it one of the most entertaining parts of the celebration.

As the activities continued, I couldn’t help but appreciate the happiness reflected on our learners' faces. Their laughter, excitement, and active participation reminded me that education goes beyond textbooks, classroom discussions, and written activities. It also involves creating meaningful experiences that help children appreciate their identity, develop confidence, and build friendships.

As a teacher at Buhawen Elementary School, celebrating IPEd Day reminded me how important it is to embrace diversity and recognize each learner’s unique gifts. Our Aeta children deserve opportunities to shine, express their talents, and celebrate their cultural identity without hesitation.

At the end of the day, we may have been tired from organizing and participating in the activities, but our hearts were filled with happiness and fulfillment. It was a day of learning, laughter, and appreciation. More importantly, it reminded us that our culture is our identity, our heritage is our pride, and every child deserves to be celebrated.

Indeed, IPEd Day was more than just a school celebration. It was a beautiful reminder that when we honor our roots, we also empower the next generation to embrace who they are and take pride in where they come from.
