It's so difficult these days with people getting sucked into false narratives. There are so many political agendas when it comes to media coverage it's challenging to really know what's going on unless you have direct experience—like you and your wife do with the school system.
Our public school system in St. Paul is in serious trouble. According to a recent study only about 35% of St. Paul public school students in general are proficient in reading (41% of high school students). That's well below state and national averages. It's sad and frightening that we're graduating kids who can't read or don't comprehend what they've read. I can't imagine navigating life as an illiterate person.

The sad thing is, that is probably never going to change unless things change in the homes. They get sent to us expecting to fix what they broke in the first place. It's wholly unrealistic.
I totally agree, Jay. My wife worked for the school system for about a year and some of the stories broke your heart. The teachers are really trying, sometimes spending their own money to buy school supplies for the classes. A large number of parents pass off their kids to the schools to raise them but the second it's time to discipline the children in any way or just tell them no the parents come in ready to fight and argue with the school staff. I don't envy teachers but highly respect anyone willing to devote their life to it.
