Almost Done?
In what appears to have been our penultimate camping trip of the summer, we made our way back to a familiar and favorite park of ours. I've written about it many times in the past, but Mitchell State Park sits on a small strip of land between lakes Mitchell and Cadillac. To the west is Lake Mitchell that you can see in the photo above.
To the east is Lake Cadillac that sits on the edge of Cadillac Michigan and for many people on the west side of the state signifies the gateway to the north.
It's a bit hard to see in the photo above, but that is the downtown area of Cadillac sitting on the shores of the lake. @mrsbozz and I took this photo one night when she decided she wanted to go for a spontaneous walk, so we headed down towards the boat launch and took a few pictures.
This was an eventful trip right from the get-go. We left work a little early on Thursday with the trailer in tow and made our way across the state to Mitchell State Park. After we got the trailer set up on our campsite, we headed across the street to one of the local markets to get a few things we needed for the weekend. As we were pulling out of the campground, my wife noticed a funny sound coming from the truck.
Sure enough, there was a large bolt through one of the tires and it was making a clicking noise as we drove down the road.
I wasn't too worried about it because we weren't losing air in the tire, but @mrsbozz was insistent that she wasn't going to risk driving home with a bolt through one of the wheels. So I called around and found a place that would fix the tire for $35 USD. I quickly drove it over there before they closed and within about a half hour I had a fully patched wheel. Which honestly drives me crazy because they place we bought the tires do repairs like this for free, but again, she didn't want to risk it. Probably smart.
One of the big draws about Mitchell State Park is the canal that connects Lake Mitchell to Lake Cadillac. If you are lucky, you can get one of the camping spots along the canal, then you can just sit all day and watch the boats float back and forth between the two lakes. It's a pretty awesome way to pass your time. Close, but not quite as good as being out on a boat yourself.
As we were sitting around the fire on Thursday night, a truck and trailer pulled up to back into the lot right next to ours. We noticed that the couple was acting kind of funny, so my wife asked me what was going on. I looked over at them to see what was going on, and that is when I realized it was one of the teachers I work with and her husband. We joked that we should go and buy a lottery ticket because honestly what are the odds of that. We have ended up at the same park with people we work with before, but never two sites right next to each other.
Pretty crazy!
We talked to the other couple a little bit but for the most part we just left them alone and they left us alone. They had some of their kids coming to stay in a tent for the weekend anyway. It's not that we aren't friendly, but neither of us expected to run into the other, so just doing our own thing seemed like the best course of action.
We had a few more adventures over the weekend, but I am going to leave those for another post!

I don't know if MrsBozz is highly intuitive or just likes to play it safe, but I think you did the right thing by listening to her. Besides, looking at these photos, I realize the best choice was to go ahead and make it an unforgettable day (regardless of the $30 you had to part with) 😅 It’s a very special place; there may be few photos, but they speak volumes about it. I’m glad you treat yourselves to outings like this and that you enjoyed the summer to the fullest. A big hug to you both!...

So bittersweet. Even though it's been hot here this week we have some very strong end-of-summer vibes going on. A few of the trees have almost completely shed their leaves—accelerated by the drought. It looks like our highs are in the low 70s next week. Unfortunately I'll be off to DC where it's forecasted to still be sweltering as it's cooling down here. I'd be tempted to try some winter camping if I had a camper. The guy who has the YouTube channel Kenny of All Trades does quite a bit of cold weather camping, it requires a lot more gear though.
We have done some pretty cool nights with our trailer, but it has a heater, so it's not too bad. You just have to worry about your freshwater and wastewater tanks freezing. We had hoped to get at least one more trip in this year, but it looks like we are going to be spending a lot of our time dealing with a family illness, so we might be done early. Have a safe trip to DC!
Kenny has had to make all kinds of modifications to his camper to allow him to use it below freezing. It would be a lot of work! I'm sorry to hear about the family illness. I hope they feel better soon! Thanks, it's going to be a whirlwind weekend. I'll be visiting my friend Juan and we'll be hitting a lot of the Smithsonian museums and touring the Capital.

Gotta keep the wife happy, and often they are the ones that have the sense. 35 bucks seems a reasonable price especially for her peace of mind..
I would love that canal, there really is something special watching boats float on past you!
