My First Hilarious Bicycle Ordeal

Hello, beautiful people of this community. Well, I never knew that a community like this existed until I saw it on a friend's post, and so today I decided to write in this community to share my hilarious ordeal as a cycler, this is my first time posting in this community, and I hope I am welcome.

When I tell people I am afraid of riding or learning how to ride a bicycle because of the part where they always say "As a learner, you have to fall off the bicycle and get injured to be able to ride a bicycle", I am yet to agree or come to terms with such "Fact" because I do not want to get injured all because I am learning how to ride a bicycle. I am generally afraid of bicycles, not just learning how to ride but also sitting on them while someone rides, it doesn't have support like motorcycles, so I wouldn't want to try doing that not for the fun too because of the scars they've showed me as result of learning how to ride a bicycle is too scary for me to want to try it out.

When I see people, especially girls ride bicycles, I get captivated at how well they ride them and I watch these girls ride bicycles with so much joy if you see me watch them, you would think I know how to ride one but the truth is I can not even turn the handle of a bicycle. When my friend who is a guy and has a bicycle knew that I didn't know how to ride a bicycle, he would always laugh at me mockingly, especially when girls of my age talk about how they started riding it and how they knew how to ride one.

I have always been afraid of heights and riding a bicycle or bike is inclusive to make matters worse, I have seen many people get injured in a bid to learn how to ride a bicycle, which is something I do not want to experience because it seems to be the reality of everyone who know how to ride.

After getting a lot of encouraging or should I say motivating words from my friends who know how to ride and a few of them volunteered to teach me how to ride a bicycle without having to fall off the bicycle and get injured, I decided to give it a try during the week, one of those days that was my exams free day.

Well, I had to go meet her at her house since we planned to use her street because it was better for learning as it was away from the main road and less busy with cars.

I was asked to mount it and as I tried mounting it, I was already shaking like a leaf that was being blown by the wind, I held onto her with a hard grip that could tear her clothes for support but even when she told me to hold the hand of the bicycle with both hands, I just couldn't because I was afraid of letting go and falling off.

So, she saw my fear and told me she wasn't going to let me go and told me I could use her as support since we were just starting when we began, the passersby especially younger girls and younger boys even the elderly ones all stopped to watch me battle with settling down on the bicycle and laughed at my struggle to be calm, I could see the surprises on their faces that someone my age was afraid of bicycles and couldn't even ride one but I didn't care, I just wanted to learn it and that is what I am going to be doing this few weeks, especially on days that are exam free day, and I will be back to update you all on how far I have gone.

The worst thing nobody ever tells you about is the pain you will feel trying how to ride a bicycle for the first time. As someone who tried that out for the first time, I came back home tired, so I slept off but woke up with pains in my knees, and my hands aching, I immediately picked up my phone and started ranting to my friends for not informing me about the pains I would be experiencing as. a first timer and I got the laugh of my life but then, it was fun and I hope to learn more but I hope this my friend will be patient with me, to learn and accept my fate at my own pace.

Indeed. And the steer looks a bit weird as well.
It's a free stockphoto by the way.

I'm not afraid of cycling, but even I find sitting on the backseat without having control of the bicycle scary 😀. Especially if you don't trust the one who is cycling.

Thanks for sharing your story and welcome to the cycling community.
