The US Mint's Brand New Dime for 2026!

Over many years I have always hated the circulating coinage here in the United States. Why? Simple, because it's relatively ugly and year after year it has the very same coin with a new date on it. Beyond that there really are few changes to make the coins more attractive. Another pet peeve of mine about it is that it's become the "old dead dudes" club glorifying former presidents and founding fathers. Back when our first president George Washington was offered to have his face on the new US coinage he turned down the offer stating that it felt too much like a king. Notwithstanding, years later, what did the politicians do? Put on former presidents including Washington himself who would have hated it.

At last, this year the US Mint is going to produce circulating coins that are different, bearing other images rather than exclusively old dead guys. It's part of the celebration of the 250th anniversary of Declaration of Independence, which was a formal act of congress asserting independence of the US Colonies from the King of England. This led to the United States Revolutionary War (American War for those in the UK) and eventual separation of the nations.

This year the coin that I most like is the one shared below, and is finally becoming available next month. The new US Dime or 10 cent coin.

About the coin:

From numista.com

This coin celebrates the early coinage that was produced by the nation with Liberty on the obverse (front) of the coin and a new bald eagle design on the reverse (back.) These initially available coins will come from the mints in Philadelphia and Denver and will not be silver. However, the San Francisco Mint is going to be producing a silver version as well this year. Right now APMEX is selling them for $4.99 each which is ridiculous, I'll be waiting until the bank has rolls of them and go pick them up for ten cents a piece personally!

When the United States was a young nation the only figure to appear on coins or paper currency was Liberty, and it's a shame that the tradition was lost and should return in my personal opinion. Hopefully this year's change may become a trend towards adopting more coinage with Liberty or even significant events or people from the nation's history on a yearly rotating basis so it's never the same. I would love to see the coinage return to works of art rather than a bunch of old dead guys.

Here is the lineup for the obverse of the coins for this year, sadly many old presidents remain, but we do see Liberty on the Half Dollar and a Quarter (25 cents) with a celebration of the arrival of the Mayflower to Plymouth Rock. These were some of the earliest English settlers to arrive in the New World.

The dime is by far my personal favorite, and I hope we see more of it's design in the future! But with the current bunch of old people in the US Congress and Senate I doubt we'll ever see much change which is truly sad. It used to be that every decade or two the coins would be completely redesigned to keep them beautiful and up to the latest technological standards. Sadly, the last president to push for beautiful US coinage was Theodore Roosevelt way back when he served as president from 1901 to 1909...

The US Mint is also producing a very cool item this year which I have already fallen in love with... It appears it's going to be a medal instead of a coin as there is no denomination on there that I can see.

So far all the information they are offering is a release date for this summer and little else. But like I said, one look at this and I was in love. This is how US coinage first looked with Liberty on the obverse, the way it still should be in my eyes. I have no idea how much this will cost but I can guarantee it will skyrocket is value once it sells out. The mint is only allowing one per household sales wise, so the mintages will be fairly low. I'll have up update on this when it has more details available!

That will wrap up today's post, I do hope you liked the new dime as much as I did. Please feel free to leave any comments or questions below, and as always your support is deeply appreciated. Have a great Wednesday everyone!

The medal looks beautiful!👍😊
I can make out the word dollars on the edge marking, but that’s about all I can read……..
Is it possible it could be a Coin after all?😇

They did a nice job with these. But I’d like to see a silver proof version.

To be fair, there have been some dead women too, including Sacagawea and Susan B. Anthony and a bunch of others on the reverse side of quarters...
