A Beautiful Arizona Gold Nugget!

Friday has come at long last. Now we all have the weekend looming on the horizon which is never an objectional thing in my opinion. I really don't have any firm plans for the weekend, but Sunday is Father's Day so I'm sure my son will want to come over and do a barbeque. That's fine with me, although I'll probably end up doing most of the cooking... Funny how that works?

Last night, I was thinking about heading out to the mountains to do some metal detecting for gold nuggets. I have a few favorite "secret" spots that I try to get out to every now and again. Fortunately, they are pretty much right off the road so I don't have to do a lot of hiking. I'm not quite as young as I once was, and those long distance hikes wear me out lugging around heavy equipment. Then I realized I hadn't shared one of my gold nuggets here in quite some time either, so here we go!

This is about three grams if I recall correctly and is one I found many years ago while metal detecting outside of Yuma, Arizona. All of the nuggets there are pretty well eroded leaving them smooth in appearance. The reason for that is that the spot they are found was an ancient river that deposited a lot of gold along the bedrock. Over eons the river dried up and was buried. Lucky for me, mother nature has eroded away most of the soil leaving the bedrock mere inches from the surface!

You can also find gold using the old fashioned method of panning. @bulliontools recently had some fun doing his first gold panning and even found some nice gold flakes. It's a lot of work, but in the right spot you can collect a nice haul like the one below:

Keep in mind, that surely didn't come from just one pan, it was probably a whole days or weekends work for the finder. Still, not too shabby! It does involve a lot of bending over and can leave you with a nice sore back, so I tend to stick with metal detecting. You will find a lot of garbage most of the time, but every now and again you get lucky!

To prove that point, a metal detectorist in Maryland went out the the beach one morning. On his very first hit (metal detector lingo for finding some metal under the surface,) this fellow found a nice gold necklace!

This necklace weighed 17.9 ounces (507 grams) and is worth $25,000. Not too bad for your first find of the day! Most people would have just kept it and walked away with the cash, but this guy was honest and tried to find the owner who had lost it. After doing some research he found the owner had placed imaged of the necklace (which was a family heirloom) online and offered a $5,000 reward. Not the $25K he could have had, but he probably slept better knowing he had done the right thing!

What would you have done? Kept it or returned it for the reward? It's a tough call, but I probably would have returned it as well. Maybe karma would return the favor some day...

Gold is always a safe investment, and it's even better when you find it for free just lying around! Prices have been taking a beating as of late, but as the conflict with Iran seems to be ending and oil prices dropping, it's just a matter of time until that changes. People will flock to gold once again as the economies around the world still aren't very solid.

What's great about precious metals is they have always been money since before recorded history and will continue to be forever. It will always have value!
