A Sad Man At 64

There's so much on my mind to let out, but somehow I'm stuck in between the mood of celebrating or just shaking my head in disdain.

My country is a great one but somehow we've been made to doubt our greatness because of the kind of leadership we've had. Right now, most Nigerians are not hopeful about the future of the country. Politicians and political leaders have made promises upon promises that are nothing short of lip service. Religious leaders, in their cluelessness, are encouraging their masses to look up to God. We've prayed for this country so much that we've lost faith because the more we pray, the more things get worse. At the end of the day, it is the poor masses that bear the rougher edge of the brunt.

How dare we pray to God but have no courage nor integrity to do what is right for the progress and betterment of the country? It seems like everyone is just waiting for the opportunity to enter into public corridors of power so they can take their own turn in looting the national treasury. This is the new political culture—criticize the government until it is your turn to hold power.

This man is 64 years old today, but he is handicapped, more of a failed man, who cannot even stand erect because he has been overwhelmed by his lack of character and integrity. His children are not even proud of him, except for his glory days which have outdated him. What is his story today? They need something to be proud of, not just stories of former glories.

The Giant of Africa? Has he been broken, beaten by his own pride and self sabotage. Can the giant rise again?

How could it be that in this era and time, men older than the country are still ruling? Men who are supposed to be retired are still carrying the burden of leadership at the detriment of posterity, while the young and agile ones are following like sheep unsure of who is leading them.

The Nigerian youth are a great and strong force. But it beats my intellect how gullible they can be during times of politics. We endure hunger and economic hardship for years but faint during the short period of elections such that we are willing to take any shit or crumbs they throw at us in order to relinquish our mandate. I guess we've learnt our lessons this time otherwise we deserve whatever leadership we get.

Religious leaders are also part of the menace. Men who should use their voice and position to speak truth to power but would rather have conjugal affairs with politicians so they can have a share of the national bread. They tell their followers to pray but cannot tell the government and politicians to do better. When men of integrity are lacking in the political arena, what can prayers do?

Democratic governance is not run by religious prayers but by the legislative brilliance and administrative skill of those in power. As long as religion continues to be the “opium of the masses” injustice in governance will continue to prevail.

Today, many people are seeking life elsewhere out of Nigeria. The country is becoming unconducive day after day. Bad government policies and corrupt government officials continue to make the situation worse. There is no more accountability in the system, and things are indeed falling apart from the center.

The Nigerian political system is in dire need of purging and corruption cleansing. Men of might, courage and strong will for good change are needed in the system. Intentional citizenship education is a good way to start. Education has always been a tool for social change, no wonder the government does not even prioritize quality education. The education sector has been relegated and underfunded, to keep it docile and powerless of course. Men without a good educational background or questionable educational pedigree have infiltrated the system. Bills and policies of both legislature and executive arms are a reflection of questionable educational pedigree of those in leadership positions.

It is a sad thing that many Nigerians do not even feel excited about a day like this. High cost of living has become a threat to the living. Most Nigerians cannot even afford two meals per day. The economy is biting really hard and deep.

However, we are Nigerians. The Naija spirit is a resilient one. We do not give up no matter the situation. We may be suffering but still we smile with hope that it will get better.

And we pray it gets better.

God bless Nigeria.

Happy Independence Day!
