Hello and welcome to all the readers.
Yes, chaotic traffic and excessive honking is really the Indian way of life.
Anyone who lives or visits major cities in India, must have first hand experienced it.
No one follows the basic sense of traffic. Overtaking and driving on the wrong side of the road is just normal.
The main culprits are the two wheelers. For them it doesn't matter whether the signal is green or red.
To add to that, are the manual carts pushed by people to move goods from one place to another.
Everyone is in a hurry to reach wherever they need to.
To add to the chaotic traffic, is excessive honking.
Which just means, get the f**k out of my way.
Honking is used for everything.
They bloody honk, even when they drive on the wrong side of the road or on the pedestrian footpath.
In mumbai, the traffic is so much that the rickshaws (tuk tuk) are not allowed in the city.
That said, the suburbs bear the brunt of that traffic.
In india, when you join a driving school, the first thing you learn is when to honk :-).
The other major issue, is the noise pollution. The amount of noise the horn makes.
Yes, there are restrictions on the no of decibles the horn should be.
And rules are made to fine the vehicles who don't follow. Bans have been placed on musical, multi-toned and pressure horns.
I remember the days when those type of horns use to scare the shit out of people walking on the sideways.
But decibles restriction is on one vehicle. Imagine 10, 15 or 20 vehicles honking at the same time, that's too loud.
Studies have shown the ill effects of loud honking noises. Where most suffer from hearing problems and other health issues.
The policeman who monitor the traffic also suffer from hearing loss.
Authorities have attempted to reduce honking. By introducing ban on “horn please” sign.
Putting up No horn signs near places like hospitals, schools etc. Putting no honking restrictions during night times in some residential areas
They’ve also turned to technological solutions.
Mumbai piloted traffic lights that could detect noise levels to delay the switch from red to green when people honk. One company even developed tech that notifies the police by triggering tail-light flashes when a driver has honked incessantly.
But sadly there is no complete solution as honking has now become part of indian culture.
Suprisingly even with this traffic chaos, there are less accidents atleast within the cities. Highways are totally a different beast as heavy vehicles like trucks are involved.
Many say, that if you can drive in Indian cites like Mumbai, you can drive anywhere in the world.
Mumbai have a well connected transport services like public buses, metro trains, local trains etc. But, many still prefer to travel by two wheelers and cars. This adds congestion and more traffic on the roads.
I am originally from Mumbai. But i have stayed in UK for 18+ years. The traffic in UK is more disciplined and everyone follows the traffic rules, with very few exceptions. Honking is only when necessary. Traffic violations are less as most of the areas are monitored by CCTV and automatic fines and deduction in license points keep the drivers well behaved.
Can, India learn from that? Maybe.
