When Forgiveness Doesn't Erase Memory

But forgiveness does not always mean access. You can forgive someone and still choose distance to protect your peace. That is not hate, it is wisdom.

I once had a girlfriend I loved deeply. Everything felt good at the start, so good that we trusted each other completely. At some point, she even gave me her Facebook password.

But months into the relationship, she started changing. She became distant, avoided me, and whenever I asked what was wrong, I never got a clear answer.

One day, out of curiosity, I checked her account. That was when I found out she cheated on me.

I was overwhelmed with anger and pain. I reacted badly, I said things I shouldn’t have said, and in that moment, I lost control of my emotions. She denied it at first, until I confronted her with what I had seen. After that, she changed her password.

We tried to fix things with the help of someone, but it was never the same again. Communication faded, effort disappeared, and slowly, we both stopped reaching out.

And just like that, what we called love quietly died.

I don’t hate her. But I find myself drifting away. I forgive her but could not forget her unfaithfulness... love can remain in the heart, while trust completely disappears.

Sometimes people forgive you, but never return to how things were. Not because they wish you harm, but because they are protecting themselves from being hurt again.

Forgiveness can heal the heart, but it doesn't always erase the memory. Some wounds change how people see you, even if love still exists.

If I see her today, I will still greet her; she is not my enemy. What we had didn't work, but it doesn't have to turn into hatred.
