Money Cannot Buy Everything, But Poverty Can Take Away Many Things

During Buhari’s regime, many people were selling their properties just to “japa” from Nigeria, but during Tinubu’s tenure, people are now selling their properties just to eat because it now takes a lot more money to leave the country…

Many properties are being listed for sale, yet there are no buyers because many people are struggling financially. Some desperate people are even selling their properties for far less than what they are worth just so they can get money to survive…

This is how bad the country has become.

One of the things I fear the most is sickness, because the amount needed to treat oneself now is far higher than what is needed just to feed.

I remember about two months ago when I was down with malaria and had to be taken to the hospital for treatment. I barely spent 48 hours there, yet when the bill came out, I was asked to pay ₦78,000… just for two days.

I regretted going to the hospital because how can malaria treatment cost ₦78k when I could have simply called my private nurse to treat me at home for less than ₦20k? Right there, I vowed not to visit the hospital again. Whatever treatment I need, I would rather handle it with my private nurse instead…

Unfortunately, some people do not have that option because of the kind of illness they are battling. A private nurse cannot take care of a cancer patient or someone with kidney failure.

This is why some people die untimely deaths, not because nothing could be done to save them, but because there is no money to fight the illness.

A lot of Nigerians diagnosed with kidney, liver, or heart problems end up dying because they cannot afford treatment or maintain their health after the diagnosis.

I hear stories on TikTok where some people say they spend more than ₦500k weekly on kidney dialysis alone. Meanwhile, many Nigerians do not even earn that amount in a month, so how are they expected to survive such a situation weekly?

The prayer now is simple: may we never be diagnosed with an illness that will empty our bank accounts just to stay alive

In this country, sickness is gradually becoming a luxury that only the rich can afford.

Money is no longer just comfort in Nigeria… it is survival.
