I watched a Nollywood movie today titled Iya by Mide Martins.

The film is about a woman who single-handedly raises her three daughters after their father abandons them.
When the daughters grow up, they begin searching for their father, something their mother strongly opposes. She doesn’t want them to have anything to do with him, but the daughters refuse to let it go.
At the end of Part 1, they leave their mother to stay with their father. I’m anxiously waiting for Part 2 because I want to know what the father did and why he abandoned his wife and children before deciding who was truly wrong.
Based on Part 1 alone, though, I think the mother made one major mistake.

Her first mistake was telling the children that their father was dead. There was no need for that lie. She could have told them, in an age-appropriate way, that their father left and chose not to be part of their lives. As they grew older and mature enough to understand, they could decide for themselves whether to forgive him. Instead, she hid the truth from them.
In my opinion, she turned the conflict into a fight between herself and her husband, when it should also have involved the children. They were the ones who had lost a father, too. That is the only reason I fault her.
As for the daughters, I also think they handled things poorly. Wanting a relationship with their father is understandable. Still, knowing how deeply their mother was hurt, there were better ways to go about it than forcing the situation to the point where she disowned them.
For now, I will reserve my final judgment until Part 2. Every story has two sides, and we have only heard one.
