There is a boy who works for a pure water factory in the estate where I live. Whenever customers buy water, they also offer a delivery service to bring it to your house for a small fee, a win-win situation: they earn extra money, and we avoid the stress.

An older man usually handles my deliveries. He charges ₦4,500 in total, ₦3,000 for the water, and ₦1,500 for delivery. Sometimes he doesn’t go alone; he sends the boy I mentioned, or other boys, to assist him. That is how I got to know the boy.

He was friendly and hardworking, so I got comfortable with him and saved his number.

One day, I needed water, and the older man wasn’t available, so I called the boy instead. He delivered, and I continued using him afterwards.

Then one day, he told me the price had increased to ₦6,000. I was confused, but I didn’t argue.

Later, when I couldn’t reach him, I called the older man again. The man was available and asked the boy to bring the water. When I asked the price directly, the boy said ₦4,500 which was the original price.

That was when I realized he had been adding extra charges for himself all along.

He lost my trust immediately. No matter how hardworking or friendly someone is, dishonesty can erase everything good about them.

I stopped using him since that day

In the end, honesty is a virtue that protects everything you build.
