Going Back Home, But Nothing Felt the Same

Most of us think about our parents getting old, but we don’t realize that we are not getting younger too.

I visited the town where I spent my childhood days. The last time I was there was ten years ago, and a lot had changed. The bad roads had been fixed, and there were more people living there now.

When I got to our estate, it hadn’t changed much except for a few new houses. But one thing had really changed, the faces of the people I saw.

Most of my childhood friends were no longer there, and our parents are now old. Some are even dead. I heard the news through social media when their families posted them.

I saw about six familiar faces, four were elderly men. Then I saw one of our big bros back then. He should be in his 40s now. The reason he is still there is because he built a house there in 2009, and that is where he plans to spend his old age. And it made me realize something, for most people, home is where their house is, but what truly makes a home is family.

When I got to our house, it was empty and locked.

There was no more mum to welcome me. Memories flooded my mind of how she was always the one welcoming me whenever I visited before they moved. May your soul continue to rest in perfect peace, Mum.

I also saw one of my childhood friends. We were very happy to see each other. I know he had a lot to tell me, but time didn’t permit us. He promised to visit me soon.

His mum is a very good woman. I once made a post about the day my parents travelled and I lost my feeding money. I went to their house to play, and she knew my parents were not around. After she finished cooking, she told me to go home and bring a plate so she could give me food. I was already thinking about how I would survive that day, and her words made me so happy that I ran home immediately. That act of kindness has stayed in my heart till today. During this visit, I gave her some money without telling her the reason why.

Life is really in phases.

The places remain, but the people change.
One day, we will also become the old people in someone else’s memory.
